So sold the house, I have an offer pending on a nice little condo that is downsized and priced cheap.... Or I can cash out and disappear overseas....Spend the next two years in Russia/Ukraine/Bosnia... either way I am starting back from ground zero with the way the market has tanked. opinions? advice? random thoughts? thanks. And yes, I spent the Clinton years out of the US,... beginning to think I should spend the Obama years OCONUS too. | ||

Call me crazy (you wouldn't be the first), but I'd LOVE to explore some of the area around Chernobyl. After Chernobel, I'd check the cesium count in the Berlin daily papers. I quit eating Turkish dates immediately, but when it hit dairy products and I needed to wean myself from Danish qvark, it was tough. The summer forest fires in the area kicked up more radioactive particles in the smoke. It's not on my itinerary. | ||

Consider hooking up with an overseas volunteer group doing work that has an inherent interest for you. There are many diverse groups that can use your willingness. Serving others selflessly is the route to discovering the virtue that lies within us all. Then you will be advantaged when you return to, as you say, "starting back from ground zero". | ||

The major disadvantage to being OCONUS right now, for me at least, it's really cutting into my ride time. But with the economy the way it is, I'll likely be here until the current administration isn't. Guess that makes it one more vote for OCONUS | ||

There's quite a bit of work in the entire persian gulf area, and most of it does not involve being shot at. We're chasing some work in Qatar right now, but I've done gigs in Saudi and Abu Dhabi. If you go expat, then you can do pretty well. I'm looking real hard at this myself. We win the work, likely I'm gone for a year - and right now that might not be a bad thing. | ||

NGO's...are a No Go for me, they are not excited about my military background,... and if I were to actually get hired by one, I have to notify my old command (at least for the next 20 years) and so much for that. we will see what happens with Xe. |
