Hey youns- anyone ever had a motorcycle lay down on your leg, in the wet grass, at about 5mph?

Ouch.

This happened to me almost a week ago, been looked at by the local emergency room, no breaks- but by Gawd I did smoosh my ankle and leg (below the knee) into the ground. Hospital bill on the way, no insurance.

Still swollen and bruised, can walk like a true gimp, been icing and keeping elevated/out of use/at rest.

Can avoid work for the next 36 hours, trying to determine best way forward.

Anyone got $.02?

Thanks in advance.

cold until swelling subsides, then warm to encourage blood flow and healing. They make a thermal ( iron/air ) therapy patch in various sized and shapes for backs, necks, knee's etc. .....but not very cheap, and I save them for bad days. ( knees )

The trick to healing is keeping the range of motion, and to not limp as much as possible. When you limp it transfers the load and then the other leg & back hurts...then you limp and then the other leg.... you get the idea.

Work the knee with the same bends & angles as the other leg, same with ankle etc. Go easy and take your time. Soft tissue injury is sometimes worse than a broken bone. Keep an eye on blood clots, loss of feeling, etc. Bad bruising can take a while.

Oh, and here's some slack.

not my favorite stuff, but I bet you feel like you've been under the title.

"Tall lace up boots?"
Nahh, got ankle high steel toed boots- those are the ones I wiped out with.

"One of those neoprene sports ankle support thingies? (f*** knows what they're really called)"
Got a plastic/velcro/nylon job, no telling what that'll be billed for...

"Wheelchair?"
Used that for the hospital visit, was helpful at that time- kinda feel like seeing how much flexibility I'll have as things progress... GF sez use the crutches, I say my bones support me, "adequate but not sufficient."

"Eyepatch & Parrot?"

got 20/15 to 20/10 vision, used to keep some nice cockatiels. Got old dawgs now. Trying not to step on them, or neglect their need to go on a walk.

Thanks.

I got hit by a truck about 13 years ago. The truck hit my leg, my leg ripped parts of the bike.

Didn't break anything, not sure how/why. Leg/ankle was pretty badly swollen and various shades of yurple and gred. (fans of My Name is Earl will get that one.)

I wrapped it all up in an ace bandage and stuffed my foot in my boot but left the laces undone. I was able to get around like that until the swelling went down.

DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO LIMP.

My orthopedic surgeon and my PT told me that if that meant slowing my walking pace, that was what I had to do. Think of walking like a metronome: left, right, left, right... tick, tock, tick, tock. Elevate, ice. Use a large bag of frozen peas instead of ice. It's reusable and trust me, you'll be grateful that you don't have to deal with all the melting ice.

Why the F aren't you asking your doctor? The ER doc could have prescribed the PT for you.

I busted my ankle jumping a fence a few years ago .. turned all kind of colors and swelled up, but nothing broken. Tall lace up boots held it straight and after the first few steps it was tolerable to walk on . Iced then heat with Advil and tequila . It worked itself out in a few weeks

The limp thing. That's important.
Range of motion too. Don't want to lose mobility.

Cold till the swelling goes down, then warm. ( peas are near ideal since you get maximum surface contact.... good tip.)

Honestly, I just searched for "slack" as a joke related to other thread. Now I have to go look up the bands you mentioned.
I quit listening to commercial radio when they quit telling me who they played, leaves me with college & indie stations.

I do have a weakness for Pink.

Thanks, all, gnite

Fixed/doctored up a frozen pizza with homegrown veggies and herbs, gave it enough time to vapor off excess moisture.

Walking as best I can to work out range of motion, as the leg heals.

It's a genuine miracle any of us monkeys evar learn to appreciate being bipeds.

Or wordsmiths.

As a leg gets smooshed under the primary of a '77 lowrider, bones still good to stand on, knowing the viscera, can yyou help me?

Thanks again, God and brethren/sisters.

Aesquire-

Go waste an afternoon at your favorite independent record store.

I've enriched my life more than I can tell you by doing so myself.

They should handle new and used inventory.

Thanks, all- any good mojo or tips you send this way is greatly appreciated.

Slaughter- I've got no insurance, so paying for medical care is a cash only exercise- already been to the ER, can only wonder what they're adding up for my bill- so, barring any bad breaks or hemhorraging, I'm DIY for this bit.

Getting better slowly, day by day...

Gotta head back to work, bartending, tomorrow nite. Wish me luck.

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Do the RICE and some NSAIDS (Advil/Naproxen) till it feels better. If you can't walk on it in 2 weeks, go back for another x-ray. The first one can look fine even if there's a crack due to swelling.

Yikes - I wasn't thinking about the insurance issue. NO WONDER you're asking.

I've been tossed into the dirt racing and have had a busted ankle. The PT was pretty well-defined because I also had toes and metatarsals broken with the MONSTER toe-jam that happened in the tumble.

I could get permission to sit at my desk with a box that I could keep my foot on top of. If you can't elevate it, you are possibly going to be a long time recovering.

I repeat tho - DO NOT LET YOURSELF LIMP. Your muscles and back will REALLY SUFFER

Well, gotta limp a little.

Will keep that in mind as things progress- I'm envisioning things healing, and taking painkillers as needed-

On one hand, the painkillers help, they manage the pain as I try to move around-

OTOH, when I wake up in the AM, most of the drugs have worn off, and I can make an assessment of the morning's pain. Been doing this for a week, heading back in to work tomorrow, damn the torpedoes.

Thanks for all youn's $.02, I'll take more more if you can spare some change.

NSAIDs - the ANTI-INFLAMMATORY effect is what you're going for. Inflamation/swelling can really slow healing. NOT just pain killing but ANTI-INFLAMATION is why they are taken.

Again, I ought to stick to wrenching - though in 6years of racing, I've gotten to know my ortho pretty well... but barely enough to be dangerous.
