I stayed up late last night or actually early this morning, getting some stuff done so I'd have a little free time today for a ride. Living here in the Tampa area, there aren't many roads I really enjoy riding close by, but I do like the Brookesville area about 45 miles north. I generally ride about 20 miles up the interstate to State Road 52 where I get on Bellamy Brothers Road and head toward Brookesville. So, I am about 2 miles from my exit on I-75 riding behind a small SUV at about 70 mph in the right hand lane. The next thing I know there is something in the middle of the road and my front tire runs right over it. I thought it was a small piece of wood or something. It was small enough the SUV apparently ran over it without touching it. When my tire hit it, it made a crunching sound and my front tire jerked left. The bike corrected though, with no problems at all, but my first thought was punctured tire or bent wheel. I started to pull over, but the bike seemed to be handling fine and it wasn't far to my exit, so I decided to ride on and check things out once I got off the interstate. So, when I get off the interstate I pull into a Waffle House parking lot and check the bike out. There was some crud on my front wheel, but I didn't see any damage. Then I noticed my pants. My left leg had blood splattered all over it from the bottom of my pants to my knee. Then I noticed the chin spoiler was covered in blood. I guess what I hit wasn't wood after all. Uly 1 - Critter 0. I continued on and rode some fun roads, for Florida anyway, and stopped in Brooksville for a bite of lunch. After lunch I pulled back out onto the road, went about half a mile and decided to turn left onto another road. I signaled, looked ahead and checked left and right. Not another vehicle in site, so I start my turn. Just as I started my turn I hear a blaring horn and swerve back to the right as a Mercedes passes inches from me on the left going about 40 mph. I regain control, look behind me again, and finish my left hand turn. Then I realize the road I had been on was one way. I had been turning left from the right hand lane. I never saw any sign or other indication I had been on a one way road. I came very close to a trip to the hospital or worse. I feel a bit stupid about what I did, but the road should have been marked more clearly that it was one way. I can promise you I will remember that is a one way road next time I go to Brookesville. Other than that it was a great ride and I had a great time. Be careful out there. |

thats to funny b/c the same exact thing happened to me this weekend! i was out enjoying the wonderfull september weather illinois has had, and i was following somebody at about 50mph getting reddy to pass them when all of a sudden a dead racoon jumps out from under there car, i didnt even realize it untill it was to late to avoid it. I just held on tight and gave it some gas. i went over it fine, it was one hell of a bump in the road, but the bike and I lived to ride another day! later on during that ride i was going through this neighborhood out in the middle of of the country on a gravel road (going about 15 or 20mph) when all of a sudden this dog comes running at me from the ditch and is running along side me yapping and barking i didnt want to accelerate to hard due to the gravel, but I sure as heck didnt want to stop either. so I kept going trying to evade the beast, when all of a sudden the dog bit into my shoe! i had riding boots on so he didnt really accomplish anything but pissing me off. so i shook him off and kept trying to continue on my way. he didnt give up he tried to bite me again but this time it was a little bit harder so i shook him off a second time. the third time he came to bite my foot i just kicked him in the face.....yea it was mean but i didnt know what else to do.... so to say the least i had an interesting ride as well! |

Sounds like you dodged the bullet twice. Once for following too closely, second for inattentive riding. |

There is really a "Bellamy Brothers Road"!?!? Don't worry about the turn situation, everyone has done something stupid, especially here in NY/NJ area! |
