Anyone else use zip ties to mount their tires instead of irons/spoons? Did my first one on the rear of my Burgman a couple of weeks ago and the second one this morning on a local guys '07 Lightning. No more dinged or scratched wheels for me, wish I'd learned this trick 40 years ago.

Several guys over on the BUSA (Burgman USA)forum have shown mounting tires with small ratchet straps, but since I didn't have any I just used 6 zip ties that are spaced equally around the tire squeezing the beads together. Just lube and push it on the rim as you would normally do the first bead then remove the ties. It takes about 6 seconds to get the tire on the rim. No more busted knuckles. You zip tie the tire so the beads touch, then push the uni-bead onto the rim. This is an EPIC IDEA!

How do you get the old tire off? Similar use of zip ties? Breaking the tire bead?

AGHRRR, THAT'S TOO EASY. Why didn't I think of that? The first bead always went on by hand. AGHRRR! Hey thank you, thank you, thank you. First tire I ever replaced a tire on a bike was a pirelli on my benelli. I cut it off with a hacksaw. What can I say, I was 17.

I'm interested how it works. Not sure how I would work out the rimlock on the dirt bikes, but it might be possible...

Hmmm... interesting idea, but to me getting the new tire on is not that big of a deal - it's getting the beads broken on the old one. Got a zip tie idea for that?

it is possible i put the tire out in teh sun for a few hours to hopefully make it more pliable and easier to work with. i broke several of teh EL-CHEAPO brand zipties tring to zinch it down. doubling them up yeilded better results. it was still harder than i thought it would be. ... not that wrestling a tire on a rim is an easy feat, but .... nevermind here's video of the whole fiasco. minute by minute i wasn't kiddn 'bout teh zipties

They make all types of zipties- mebbe the ones the po-po use for mass handcuffs? Some are designed to "undo", don't have to cut them... I've got several small cam-buckle straps (bout the size of a helmet chin strap), got them in the camping dept at Wallyworld, use/LOVE them for camping regularly- buy all I can when I see them. I wonder if they would work? MORE PICS PLEEZE...

Neighborhood so bad you have to carry when mounting tires? Don't see any lube in the pics. Its been years since I've fought my wheels on a tail gate or work bench, get a wheel vise to hold it securely and you won't be chasing your ass. The ties I use I got from an AT&T lineman with a 100 lb. breaking strength. If I can get the 07 Lightning owner(hodakaharold) to post he will verify his new PP 2CT literally fell on the rim with one push an one shove.

Lowes sells heavy duty zip ties for heating and air-conditioning. They use them to wrap insulation on duct work. I bet they would work really well.
