HD gets plenty free advertising from people tattooing the logo on their arms. Between that and some money getting moto-journalists to ride your bikes and write reviews it should cover 90% of your target audience. |

I own an agency that has handled a dozen different brands for a (small) national market. No TV - but press and online production. Including Harley Triumph Vespa Shoei Arai and Avon Tyres - mostly all at the same time. On my own - with no staff. Easily. Mega agency costs make me laugh lolocopters. |

HD Head of Marketing: "Ok we want to expand our market to new, younger buyers of Harley Davidson who have never bought a Harley before." Ad Agency: "Great! What products do you have that might attract a younger target market?" HD Head of Marketing "......................" Ad Agency: "Ok, what changes have you made to your current product offering that might make it attractive to younger buyers?" HD Head of Marketing "Fat Tires!" Ad Agency: "Ok......well..... Let us get back to you." |

Crispin Porter + Bogusky was doing fine for the few months they were on board till the plug was pulled. Hell, I bought 3 Buells during that time. |

I often wonder if the stink from the campaign had some influence on Harley's decision. There were certainly some pee'd off existing customers keeping those cards and letters coming in. And I'll probably never know. |

So they did $11 million in business from H-D last year, and that's not enough to keep a 30 year client? You don't just walk away from a long-term paying client unless there is some compelling reason, as in 'this relationship is no longer beneficial to Carmichael Lynch'. I'm willing to bet that there is more to this story than is apparent. |

So they did $11 million in business from H-D last year, and that's not enough to keep a 30 year client? My first thought too but then I reread it and it said that HD spent $11 million on television ads and "other measured media" so C/L's take on that money would be for the production of the commercials. I would assume the value of that work is just a small percentage of $11 million. |

Hmmmmm .... Buell gone ...... Seasoned execs say no to mega bonuses to stick around and walk out .....sell MV for €1.....continue to "motivate" remaining staff by "moving everything out of Milwaukee" ( you can't imagine the turmoil this is causing among long time employees)... The tip of the Wandell iceberg |

Ouch. Pretty sad when a marketing company drops a 30 year client that purchased $11m in marketing last year...because they don't believe that even the marketing company can help them. |

I realize this is all interesting conversation and conjecture, and I may be a bit dense... Marketing firms are all about image, right? Marketing is part of what I do, but we are not a "marketing firm" that specializes in promoting someone else's product, so I may need some enlightenment from someone who does work directly in marketing. My question is: If one of your clients is looking like they are heading to FAIL, do you as a marketing company: A - keep taking their money and do the best you can to promote their product in a positive light, or.. (revenue is revenue, and we don't care where it comes from) B - decide that a potential blemish on your record of success isn't worth that client's money. (We sell our image, and a hit to our image is not in our long-term interest) |
