Ok kiddies... now is the time to brag about your longest ride... I am gearing up the Piglet for Buelltoberfest and thinking of making my first Saddle Sore 1000 attempt... Springfield Corners, WI to Durham, NC taking this route is 1000.5 miles... any thoughts (except to avoid chicago)?

I think if I hit Chi Town around 530 AM on a Saturday morning it should be all good... |

My longest ride was 900 miles in one day on a 350cc Harley Sprint. Just a big joy ride around Iowa/Missouri.Several 400 mile day trips and over 1,300 miles at Laconai bike week............the year when I wasn't held back by a big twin buddy. |

Make it a tad longer. You are cutting the mileage a bit close. I did a Saddle Sore 1000 on my FXDX a couple of years ago. Probably my biggest mistake was not taking the time to stay hydrated. Early in the ride I was all about speed and efficiency. Since my bike would only go about 140 miles between fill ups I would get off the bike, fill up, get the receipt and write down my miles and jump back on the bike. It was very hot and I should have taken some time to drink water or Gatorade. By about the 700 mile mark I was taking much slower stops, drinking something, walking around a bit to get stretched out. All in all, it wasn't that bad though. I made it in about 18 hours with one meal stop and a bunch of gas stops. My route was about 1050 miles because I didn't want the Iron Butt folks to use a different mapping program than I did and come up short. I'm glad I did it. Honestly, I am not as comfortable on my Buell yet as I am on my Harley. Hopefully, with time I will continue to get more comfortable on my Buell and maybe I'll do a Saddle Sore or even a Bun Burner on it. |

Good luck with Chicago. My farthest is only about 400 miles, across WI and into MN. Recently went from West Bend to Ontario, WI and back, those are some fun roads! Next year I plan on riding to CO, just over 1000 miles, but I am still deciding if I want to make it an Iron Butt ride. |

The alternative route is through Nashville... which would make it about 1150 miles... and that is too long... Chicago can be a bitch at 5 AM on a weekday, as I had a commute for six months before all the I PASS lanes were re-built... The longest I did was Durham to Chicago... around 850 miles and that included an hour of f***ing around and getting lost in Cinncinnati... |

I think if I hit Chi Town around 530 AM on a Saturday morning it should be all good... last Saturday I rode my motorcycle into Chicago (first time this year) and rode past Soldier Field about two hours before a game and also the Cubs were playing(if you want to call it that) an afternoon game at Wrigley Field. I didn't have any trouble. I took the Illinois tollway I 94 home and drove 80 or above all the way to Gurnee where I turned off. While I'd rather be riding on the Southwest Wisconsin blacktops, I still don't see much of a problem riding in Chicago. |

Try staying southbound on I-39 to Bloomington, then east on I-74 to Indy. Mapquest shows that as 1040 miles. Another tip for Chicago is to get an IPass. Tolls are 50% off and no waiting. Some discussion: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/37/ 459525.html?1272312885 |

I don't have much to add, but Dynasport is right, stay hydrated from the start, and munch as you go. Also, I take a couple aspirin before I go, seems to put the inevitable soreness off for a while. I've done Rockford to Orlando many times. (Message edited by Rich on August 29, 2010) |

+1 on staying hydrated ,i did 1207 miles when i got my IBA cert, i rode to fox creek leather , bought a jacket & rode back home in 20 hrs. thats why the extra 207 miles Try to add like 10 miles to your trip, it would suck if their maps showed you going 999.9 miles and disqualified you. Good Luck and Enjoy the Ride. |

the one thing i keep forgetting about on long rides are the bicycle shorts. went into a metric shop yesterday and not only did they have a firebolt for sale in there but part of their clothing line are "fox" bicycle shorts. i'm sure they call them motorcycle shorts or something to that effect. |

My last IB ride was a 100ccc, done in early May of this year. Total miles in a week were 7,500. "Chi Town around 530 AM on a Saturday morning". You should have no trouble, in fact at that time, Chicago is fun. Take the express lanes and enjoy the sites. Yes, I-Pass saves a lot of time. Stay hydrated, Gatorade while getting gas should do it. Bicycle shorts help a lot. Put wallet in jacket, not in back pocket. Expect to get sore, move around when riding, change foot positions, I ride with feet on passenger pegs at times. The idea is to relieve pressure points before they develop into a cramp or pain. I'd shoot for 1015-1020 mile route. The IBA will look at your route and take the shortest distances between stops to calculate mileage. It doesn't matter what your odometer says. What bike are you going to ride? The City X? Good luck, Bob |

Hard to tell exactly what route you have planned around Chicago, but here's what I would recommend... Get on 290 south. Exit on 355 south. Take 355 all the way south to 80 east. Then you can take 65 south toward Indy. It's not the shortest route, but it's got less traffic and 80 has a higher speed limit. 355 does have construction going on, but early AM it's not too bad. You'll go a few extra miles but time rolling will be about the same. |

Cubs were playing(if you want to call it that) Have had the I-PASS for years, otherwise I would avoid Chicago altogether... Will take advice on Indy too. I would freakin hate to have spent 16 to 18 hours on the bike and have to keep driving around just to get to 1000... I always take Alleve on long trips bc I got Carpal Tunnel... it is easier to ignore that way... Looks like I am going to Buelltoberfest too... just got a reservation at Two Wheels Only... for the 14th and 15th... The cold is probably my biggest concern... and/or if it is cold and rainy... if I crap out from the cold, you guys in Tennessee can expect a visitor... will have to set up the "bail out" plan... |

They send you a nasty little letter with a fine for each "violation" and a photo of your plate... NINE MONTHS LATER... then you go "WTF?????"... and have to dig out your documentation... I was lucky bc with it being a work trip, I had all my receipts nice and tidy... so you sit on the phone for two hours to reach a human, tell them what happened and then they charge your account... A true PITA!!! |

Go for it! Have fun, a blast even.. +1 on staying hydrated. Having fruit with-in reach to eat while on the bike is a good idea too. Energy bars. You should time to stop and rest / eat a good meal. Longest run: 925mi / 24 hrs, on a KLR 650. Wasn't trying to do 1000/24. Went up to Iowa and back. Stopped three places, 1.5 hrs at a friends business opening, 2 hrs in Iowa, 40 min. Breaktfest stop. |

Go over every nut and bolt on your bike with a wrench to make sure everything is tight. Check air pressure. Check your gear. Helmet. Visor. Rain gear. Heated gear(if you have it). Check your luggage for bad zippers/latches, fraying, anything that would potentially cause a delay. A hydration pack could be handy for sipping on the go. Tunes. And not some Sade crap. Something rocking. |

good luck on your ride, I am doing my first SS1000 this week (http://www.tennesseevolunteer1000.org/index.htm.) We are going from one end of Tennessee to the other and back. I just put on a new rear tire and am going to add a sheep skin seat cover. |

Brad, Have fun... it would be so cool to have someone to share the misery with... maybe I can talk my friend Rich into it... If we have "Indian Summer" weather and a dry day it should be do-able... maybe borrow some heated gloves or vest... |

Char, I hope you do it and wish you good luck...I will let you know how mine goes sometime late Thursday night or Friday. If you haven't yet, you should look up the rules page for the SS1000 and they have a "25 tips" page as well. I will look it up and add the links to both. |
