I don't feel there is a need to start a thread on this. Just my opinion. |

Sports are dangerous. Racing, football, baseball you name it. But keep them out of sports what do they do? sex and drugs? I think the risks are lower with having kids doing something like racing. |

I'm pretty sure my parents are glad that they caught me having sex at 14 instead of losing my life on a race track. Just saying. Truly sad what happened. |

Hey, we all have to die some day, and I believe that it is best to die doing what you love! That being said, it is sad that the deceased is only 13, but the reality is that we will go when our time comes no matter what we are doing. It was obviously the kid's time to go, and it would have happened wether he was on a motorcycle or in a bubble. My condolences to his family, and thank you for allowing your child to truly express himself by letting him participate in something that he loved! |

I agree I have heard of more than one racer that died in auto accidents that were not their fault after they quit racing. when its your time its just your time

I hope no one is advocating an age limit to race, "for the children". This was a tragic event, may he rest in peace, and race with the greats in heaven. |

There is already a thread on this. There is a thread on how young is to young?} I know there is a thread about the untimely death of Peter Lenz |

I was never racing but my dad put me on a 100cc 2 stroke dirt bike at 7. yet I think some 30yo are too young. sometimes you need to judge the person, peter Lenz was not too young to be out there, were some of the other riders? I'll never know, but Rossi went down 4 times that day so I am voting on track conditions as a major factor. I have seen the interviews from Lenz, he was a remarkable young man and mature way beyond his years. but that is the difference, he exhibited control, understanding of his machine its limits and control of himself. of a person cannot or does not have any of these traits they are too young, regardless of how many times they have circled the sun. |

I think if The child show ability, maturity and the nessesary skills then why not? It's not like they just let any 13 year old out on the track, They have to Earn the Expert license. If any one that has any knowledge of Road Racing, It Is not an easy thing to do! The kid put in the work! I'm glad he was able to enjoy his childhood doing something that only most of us Dream About! I send my Prayers out to his Family! |

I'm sorry but I think it is ridiculous to say "at least he died doing something he loved" about a 13 year old. |

Lenz looked right at home on that machine. A blanket rule would block fully capable riders of enjoying a great sport. |

Macbuell (Mark) - you are exactly right in making that statement about ANYBODY "dying doing something that they loved." That statement has ALWAYS bothered me deeply. It is so often said by those who haven't faced their own death, who think that as you're struggling to regain control of your aircraft or vehicle, sliding down the face of the rocks HOPING that the anchor holds... you're thinking to yourself "Hey, this is cool - at least I'm gonna die doing something I love." - it doesn't work that way. Trust me. I don't think he was lying there on the ground thinking anything other than I gotta get safe. People saying this BS about "doing something he loved" need to let go of that. It's a tragedy anytime any of us dies or is killed but let's not get into transferring our own wants/wishes onto somebody else. |

I don't have any numbers, but I'd be willing to bet more kids drown in a given summer than have motorcycle racing the last 10 years combined. |

I don't really have an opinion other than it's sad. Died 'doing something he loved' or 'because of something he loved'? '13yo dies in a state of extreme distress after crashing and being run over' doesn't feel very nice. But then punk kids with no interests are a social problem too. What a tough one. |

Danger Dave brings up something that I originally held off posting - and certainly would NOT post on the racing boards that I frequent... from Joseph Heller - Catch 22 Yossarian goes to tell Natley's "lady of ill repute" that Nately was just killed on their last mission. She just goes nuts, screaming, wailing... and Yossarian says that he was an old man. She shuts up a moment, exclaims (words to the effect) "OLD??!! He lied about his age, he was only seventeen!" To which Yossarian replied: "He's dead, you can't get any older." This is life, nobody gets out alive. |

I'm a firm believer of "when it's your time to go....it's your time to go". If you are riding a motorcycle, or sitting in your easy chair at home, death can find you. I know too many people (kids included) who have succumbed to cancer, injuries from auto accidents, heart attacks, etc. How young is too young? I don't think it matters. If it's one of your loved ones, does it matter if they are 13 or 103. It's sad either way. Godspeed to him and God be with his family and friends. |

I wonder what the statistic is of 13 year olds that die of crack or meth or heroin these days... or suicide for that matter... not saying this really weighs in on the argument... but I would guess at least 1000 a year in the US alone... and that maybe 10% of them get reported as such... just sayin... |

>> If you are riding a motorcycle, or sitting in your easy chair at home, death can find you. << Maybe so, but you don't have to give it a map and there's a big X-marks-the spot at race tracks. |

I'd have to say when you have a kid and are faced with the choice, do what you feel is right....other than that, mind your own damn business. |
