I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but I hope spreading this video could somehow raise awareness to prevent this in the future. This is just another black eye for the good cops.
They did say he is facing charges on reckless homicide. It is bad that he wasn't handled according to procedures and that lead to having to drop the DUI charge. I hope they will accept the blood test that was done in his hearing to get him fired. Twice the legal limit while in his cruiser is a very bad thing.
Holy F%*k!!!! When I read the headline, I figured the cop was at least in his own car/off duty!!!! If his blood was drawn at a lab, it was probably some time after the accident??? (leading to a lesser reading?!)
He should be in jail like anyone else would be. He was a supposed to be protector of the people. I have no pity for him,or the ones protecting him. Such a tragic unnecessary loss of life.

Good cops? I was unaware of their existence. Just listen to the video. Every cop at the scene was protecting their "brother" by not giving a breathalyzer and is therefore in the bad cop group. They are just a bunch of power hungry, Orwellian, fear mongers who were picked on as little kids and want to ruin the lives of other people. Cops suck.
Why the hell is not the question being asked "why was this officer in a squad car after he had been consuming alcohol?".
The technical bit about who administered the blood test is just BS. A loop hole that they keep in their pocket for just such cases. But why was he not fired for getting behind the wheel of a squad car with ANY alcohol in his system?
Gschuette Good cops? I was unaware of their existence. ...then you need to meet me and a couple of other Badwebbers here. Your horizons can become wider if you allow them to.
I share in the outrage of replies to the original post in the thread.
I yearn for a time in the past when most people were decent and were expected to accept the consequences for their actions.
Shame on these officers for even trying to help their buddy get out of this. And shame on the officer not only for thinking he was above the law, but most of all for not stepping forward like an honorable man should and accept the consequences of his actions.
That being said, if most people fully expected to be punished when they did wrong and accepted that as the norm instead of looking for technicalities and/or loopholes to save their lilly white hineys, people would probably think twice before doing something stupid in the first place.
Another good point made here is that the department should have a no-exceptions policy for an immediate drug & alcohol test in the case of an accident or utilization of deadly force. Not only does this help deter bad behavior on the job, it also helps the department maintain it's professional image and the public's trust.
I am on the job so to speak here in Texas, and my colleagues and I know that if we get into an accident or involved in a serious incident, the very first thing that will be done is we will be escorted to a collection site and tested right there on the spot; no exceptions.
I applaud this policy that speaks to professionalism. We should be held to a higher standard if we want to wield authority over citizens.
Road, you are correct. He was taken to an immediate care center where cops go for non-life threatening injuries. His blood was drawn by a tech that did not have the proper certification.
The department does have an absolute policy for a blood draw in any accident involving an officer . . . however, this one was not administered in accordance with said policy. . . The blood draw was overseen by officers on the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team . . . Ones that were well aware of the proper, legal procedures. . .
Noone1569, Please keep us posted. The Police Officers involved should ALL be charged with some type of Obstruction of Justice, among other things. Post new news, if you wouldn't mind, from time to time.
If I were a cop that has to respond to things that most normal people would run from, would you want this scumbag showing up when you call for back up? Do you really want your back up to be at twice the legal limit? I would think that the other cops would want him off the force just so he doesn't get them killed.
