So I finally got an offer on the house, hopefully it sells. Now onto the next thing. and a bout of indecision. New digs? A big RV trailer on a plot w power/water 89k A big RV pusher in a 'senior park' with spot rental 35K (the really big pushers are suddenly CHEAP) A plot o land, small cabin, off grid. About 45-65 depending on water access and location A condo that has a rental availability for long times of abscense 59k A barge in the marina 48K plus morage I am done with traditional house living. This will be the last real 'property' I buy. Thoughts, recommendations, is it too early for my midlife crisis ? 42 in 30 days. |

A big RV trailer with at least three plots in different areas of the country sounds appetizing. Senior park.....fail. You won't fit in and the blue hairs will kick your ass. Small remote cabin, eh.....gimmy three of them in different climactic locations too. Condo.....fail.....too many rules. Yuppy neighbors will kick your ass with rules. Barge, interesting, garage is a problem, weather can kick your ass. You probably cannot control about 10% of your annual home life due to the weather. What about just living off the bike for a couple of months while touring the continent, that way you give yourself some real time to make a decision? |

I'd vote for the condo. As I'm starting only my second year of home ownership, I'm finding myself very tired of the upkeep needed. A condo, with people to mow the lawn and shovel snow for me sounds real appealing, and if I could have the size garage I wanted and bother neighbors with the band practice, I'd have done it. I also like Etennuly's idea of just living off the bike. Sell whatever you're selling, put a few g's in your pocket and spend them on motel's room at whatever town to end up in each night. |

Cityxslicker, make sure to ask about any rules concerning motorcycles an owners-association might have. Some condo and RV owner-associations don't allow motorcycles to be ridden in their park, because of noise concerns. You either park it outside, or get used to pushing it. |

It's never too early for a good mid-life crisis. I like the off grid cabin idea, in fact I have one in an undisclosed location. It just doesn't have a well at this point so water must be brought in. Not a problem for it's current use though. The RV idea appeals to me and we have talked of this often in our house. Someone my wife worked with took this route in their mid-40's and have never looked back. It's been about 15 years and we still trade Christmas cards. The flexibility really appeals to me. One question though? What's a big RV pusher? You selling drugs to seniors or something? |

simple - buy an off-lease RV, as long as practical [toy hauler!] while still light & short enough to drive & park reasonably there exists a nationwide combination of city, state & national parks; Wal-Marts; friends & family; short-term employers; RV parks; BRAN; & a myriad of additional possibilities - these combine to place an RV at the top of my alternate-lifestyle list I believe the RV suggestion to be superior to refurbished school/city buses [bad fuel mileage], tho' I stand ready to be proven 'wrong' ..... proof's in the pix, fellas |

Our friends used to spend summer in MN and winter in FL. They worked part time at the camp grounds they stayed at. Worked out great for them. Between seasons they went where they wanted. |

Barge. I like water but a cabin would be quite nice as well |

Just get a good tent and live in the state park-off the grid. We know ginger will get you back there. |

Head to the hills! A plot o land, small cabin, off grid. About 45-65 depending on water access and location Man alive! We used to have about 10 acres back home, I should have never left. Ann didn't like being isolated. I don' think she could used to being so far away from everything. No jumping in the car to go to the store, unless you were prepared to be gone for a while. She misses it now... Soon we'll be nesting empty...then it'll be time to head back home. |

A small cabin in the middle of frikkin' nowhere, and a motorcycle. I'd ride around the world, spend a night at the cabin, then ride around the world again, then spend another night at the cabin, then ride around the world again, then spend another night at the cabin, then ride around the world again... Someday. FB |

Trailer park, handicap ramp to park the bike inside. Buy some cheap rental property in the city a double with a garage. Live in the basement and rent out both halves. Go on a Wild Hogs ride and find a cute girl that owns a diner. Live in a box van and stealth camp. |

Small cabin here, another in OZ - possibly Fiji. Endless Summer. Land in Fiji is cheap - something worth considering is the roads are more appropriate for dual-sporting. (Message edited by slaughter on August 13, 2010) |

A cabin in the middle of no where with a plot large enough that if someone is bothering you, they are trespassing. Hum, sounds like mountain grass. |

I've considered being homeless on Maui. If you keep a fishing line wet you can camp on the beach at no cost. Probably one of the easiest climates to live without shelter. Of course my views have changed a little bit as the decades roll by. |

My best buddy has lived on a houseboat for years now- just recently upgraded to a MUCH nicer one, sold his old one to a buddy he works with- when I go visit, I get a little jealous. I've got a 2 BR shoebox of a house, getting ready to do a nice refi on it next week- it'd be a good question, what to do all over again, given a chance... |

If you (or anyone else) decide on the RV route...give me a call, it's what I do now And, a "pusher" is a diesel motorhome with the engine in the back. Verrrry swanky. We have a brand new 42' Fleetwood Revolution LE in stock. Diesel generator, three slides, ceramic tile floors, granite countertops, four TV's, washer/dryer, dishwasher, LED mood lighting, dual A/C (2 zones), backup and lane change cameras with their own screen so it doesn't interfere with the GPS screen...and a Spartan chassis with 450hp / 1250tq Cummins motor that meets the new emissions specs (cleaner air out the tailpipe than in the air filter, or so they say). It's niiiiice. http://www.beckleysrvs.com/inventory/106899/New-20 11-Fleetwood-RV-Revolution-LE-42T.aspx |

I'm just about at the point of chucking my property and doing something different. If I suddenly lost my job I'd be gone. What kind of license does a motorhome like the above require. That thing is F'ing expensive! |

What kind of license does a motorhome like the above require. That thing is F'ing expensive! In most states if you are licensed to drive a Suzuki Samuri that is good enough. I have not seen where a CDL is required unless you professionally transport them. |

Condo. Rent it out. You won't be 42 and loose forever. It presents the best opportunity to live how you want to when you are 62, too. |

OK, Old Mans advice. Right now the housing market is horribly depressed, if you can get a loan you can buy for about 1/3 of what the property sold for 5 years ago. It equals out to really cheap rent with a few tax benefits. The boat=water, the water=bikinis, bikinis=girls, girls=big trouble. The RV thing is kind of a neat idea as some of the trailers have a garage in the back half of it that can be used to wrench on things. Being mobile has its benefits, you can go to where the work is, travel to where you want to and as you learn the system you can find some really cheap to free places to stay as you travel around and you don't have to stay anywhere longer than you really want to. But most of all, do what will REALLY make YOU happy. |

Something that big not requiring a CDL is a real traveling road hazard. It should fall under a class B since it is a straight truck and probably weighs more than a class C license allows. |

You can thank the AARP for RV's only needing a standard license. Which triggers the next all-to-common scary image: 80 yr olds that shouldn't even be driving cars driving a 40ft RV... |
