Check my profile pic out... I have since sold my HD bagger (I have had 4) kept the Uly . 1. I hated trying to keep the chrome clean. Washing a bagger is a bitch! 2. At 800 plus pounds it is hell just to move around. 3. My Uly insurance is cheaper.
But if your friend wants pure comfort than He can't beat a bagger for that!
1. I hated trying to keep the chrome clean. Washing a bagger is a bitch!
Easiest bike I've ever owned to keep clean (except when I'm riding in the woods with Los Only Boyz.) Seldom even wash mine, pretty much just wipe-and-go.
2. At 800 plus pounds it is hell just to move around.
I'm 5'8" if I tiptoe, and have no probs moving my RK around. Heavier than a Uly? Yes. Is this problematic? No.
The RK can do a lot of the things a Uly can but at either half the speed or twice the time.
Are you speaking from experience, or just parroting something you read on the Internet?
Here's one; I took the Uly down the Lippincott Mine trail in Death Valley. Let's see you do that on a bagger.
Used to live near Death Valley, and have ridden there many times. That said, I've not ridden the Lippincott Mine trail. Since you have first-hand experience, what exactly would prevent me from taking my Road King down this trail?
However, unlike most of you, I've got extensive experience on both a Ulysses and a Bagger, so my opinion means something (to me, anyway).
I spent last weekend riding with Los Only Boyz (a notorious local Uly gang), and much of that was spent off-road on the kind of stuff a Uly was made for. My RK handled it all with aplomb.
My understanding was that when he ran the 106 runs of deals gap in 24 hours his wife made him hang up his spurs for good or pack his crap and get out. That ultimatum would have caused a lot of trouble with me. I'll hang up the spurs if I'm permanently disabled, or dead. Maybe she shoulda married a "slow" dude!
Where's the hills, washouts and mud that I take my Uly on almost every weekend.
Um, we were busy during the more difficult sections, getting thru the more difficult sections?
My point isn't that a Bagger is the equal of a Uly in the off-road stuff. It CAN'T be - my RK weighs 800 pounds, for one reason, and is longer and rides closer to the ground. Plus, my tires are purely street-oriented.
But it was stated earlier in this thread that a Uly is a more versatile motorcycle than a Bagger, to which I asked for specific examples of this "extra" versatility.
It could easily be argued that my Road King makes a better cruiser or tourer than the Uly. That doesn't prove anything, or make it "better," but it also adds to the versatility of a machine that also comports itself quite capably when slumming with Los Only Boyz.

I'd like a Uly someday, but right now it would just be a "repeat" bike to the S3T I have - in that it would serve the exact same purpose (I don't think I'd get into dirt enough to justify anything).
I've ridden a 'new-frame' EG, and I have to say they handle spectacularly. Much better than any other Harley I've ridden, and I've ridden more than a few.
I think this guy needs to ride both, but he also needs to think about what he wants to do with it. If he's going to take his wife cross-country, the Harley is the wise choice. Not saying a Uly couldn't do it, but the HD will do it much better. If he's just doing local stuff, occasional 2-up, then I would pick the Uly, BUT, it all depends on what 'gets him'. One bike has got to speak to him more than the other.
I'll have a Road King someday, and hopefully convince the woman to hop on the back for a dozen states or so.
