Left Robbinsville, NC this morning heading back toward Chicago. Saw a thermometer at 97 at our lunch stop. Kept a wet bandana around my neck the whole way, lots of drink stops, about every 50-60 miles. Just before a mid afternoon fuel stop I realized my right leg was getting painful. Saw a thermometer at 103! We hit a DQ for a Blizzard and a bunch of ice water. Poured a quart of ice water on the inside of my mesh jacket just before leaving. Wrapped ice cubes in my bandana. Beat the heat for a while, but it roasted us again. We made it to the Indiana state line and we were wiped out. Changed into some shorts and noticed that the inside of my right knee actually has burn marks! It's like cooking the frog by starting him in cool water and slowly heating it up. Nasty hot!

I had the same thing happen last month on a ride through the Florida Panhandle, cooked my inner knee and I didn't even know it for a while. I've got some nasty nerve damage on the inside of my right leg where I had an accident, numb for the last 20 years. |

I had the same thing happen on my ride to the 25th homecoming on my '08 ULY. What can you do? Tis a love/hate relationship we have with these bikes sometimes. Fortunately for me, it's more love than hate...

I went for a 350 mile ride today. I left at noon and just got home...Boy was it hot! Ok so I have no burns or redness on my legs, but I wear Starter Dry Star spandex. The spandex keep my waist to my knees dry and keep my gonads from getting caught under my arss, in other words they minimize the bounce from the road. Give dry spandex a shot and save your nads from driving you mad. |

the dry spandex go under my pants...that makes a double layer. I am just trying to give good advice...a brother from another mother! Indiana heat index today was around 105-110 |

Off for round 2 of going home. I've got taxi driver beads on the seat and never had problems with the seat heat through all of this. They work great! Keeps you dry and no monkey but at all. I wont claim they kept me cool, nothing was cool. Today looks much better other than a line of thunderstorms that we may have to punch through. Highs near 90! Blessed coolness! |

ummm... It's an engine made of metal, mounted into a metal frame, connected with metal hardware. It's hot outside, you ride for days on end, the bike is hot. YOU WERE EXPECTING MAYBE AIR CONDITIONING??? lol I kid because I love... |

Come on Spidey, I showed bare leg above the knee! We made it home and got the lawn mowed. I thought we were going to have a bad situation this morning. Heading north on some back road in southern IN I came around a corner and saw a dog right on the center line of the road. I could see the dog wasn't acting right and as I got closer I could see it was going in circles on three legs with a rear leg stuck forward in an unnatural position. I had a very sick feeling as I motioned to my wife that I was stopping. I was pretty worried about approaching what appeared to be an injured dog in the middle of nowhere so I kept all my riding gear on. The dog, which appeared to be some sort of lab mutt was pretty skittish of me and tried to back away. That's when I saw the problem, it's back leg was hooked on the short length of broken chain hanging from it's collar. We both settled down a bit as I approached slowly, still on the center line of the road BTW. Turns out the chain had worn through from dragging on cement and left a sharp hook that had snagged in his hind leg. Once I got that unhooked he took off for about 20 feet then stopped and turned to look back at me, like I might just turn out to be friendly. The chain was still hanging from his collar and I really wanted to make sure that it caused no more harm so I coaxed him back and he nervously came to me and quickly took to being petted. I unhooked what was left of the chain and tossed it to the shoulder and decided that it was time to get out of the middle of the road. Well we could see that we were about to get rained on so we decided to just get our rain gear on and the dog is hanging around like a new found friend. I really had no idea what else to do because I had no idea where the poor guy came from. We got all out gear on and gave him one last pet and tried to urge him on his way. You could see he wanted us to stay and play, but we had tracks to make and the sky looked nasty. We carefully pulled away with him trotting next to us and falling back as we sped up, and stopped with a sad look as his new friends took off. Well we made tracks and skirted around a huge thunder storm only hitting a little bit of rain for a few minutes with a good feeling of helping out a dog in a bad way. I hope he found his way home OK and stayed out of the middle of the road. He had no tags so there was little else I could do. As for the right side heat on the frame, it's never been that bad before, so no I haven't done anything to help it. I don't usually ride for hours at a time in 100+ degree heat, so I'm not too concerned. I was just surprised how I let myself gradually get burned. We had a great road trip, but it's good to be back home. Maybe tomorrow I will H.T.F.U. |
