Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge of Grovetown, GA? It is a few miles west of Augusta. At first I thought it was a suburb of Atlanta, but found it near Augusta. All I know about Augusta is that there is a golf course I'd have a tough time getting access to. For that matter all I really know about Atlanta is that I'd like to visit the local BRAG groups clubhouse someday, and a few episodes of watching Cops on TV. Oh, and various cycling reports of riding in that area.
So, educate me please about Grovetown. My job search has been fruitless within a commutable distance so I'm now looking at contracting as a hired gun (so to speak) and flying home every other weekend or so.
What are rents like? Crime rate? Buy and drag a trailer/camper with me to sleep in or do the hotel / motel / studio apartment / chicken coop by the barn thing for accomodations? That sort of stuff so I've got some idea of what to expect if and when I get there. I assume I'd want to bring one of the Buells, unless it would be a major theft target. I'm mainly looking for input to help decide if this is a viable option, and to help calculate a per diem split if the contract house will work with me on that. (Which isn't looking too good yet because I think they've been calling from an unidentified number and apparently they don't want to leave a message nor return an email - maybe I've already got my answer and I should get a local shop job bending sheet metal for entry level wages instead ).
Anyway, thanks in advance for any input. And if you want to turn this into a music thread about tunes with Georgia in the title or lyrics then that would be okay too.
Willie Nelson does that Georgia On My Mind song. And a couple blues and/or jazz musicians have done a rendition of "Georgia". And I heard tales of one guy spending unwanted time down there and writing a song about it. All these might even all be the same tune for all I can recall at the moment.
Thumbs got tired typing this so I'll stop here and hover/lurk a bit and begin to wander home shortly.
I lived in Grovetown 4 years ago, then it was nice with low crime. Columbia county is where you want to be for schools if you have kids. Rent was reasonable /cost of living. Martinez, Evans also a decent area. Wife keeps talking about moving back, we shall see about that.
Thanks. It would be just me so no worry about the schools, still good to know because it seems if the schools are decent then the community usually is too.
Re: the song: I think Ray Charles wrote/sung something about Georgia.
Off to play the headhunter game and send out another dozen resumes.
Well here's you a song about Georgia if you can make it through it. I was born in Albany Ga which is where part of this song was filmed, and raised in Lee County which the sign pops up in the video, But sorry it's in South West Georgia... Not sure about the Augusta Area.
edited to add video.. just learned how to do that (Message edited by johntman on August 03, 2010)
if you get on, give me a heads up. just talked to my brother inlaw about spartanburg. looks like they might be putting on some more people. he started monday. it would be nice to get back up that way. love the area too. he talked to a recruiter named steve gardner with southern design up there and he said that they will probably be needing some 2-d done also. if you want a #, shoot me a pm mike. good luck.
I've just recently moved to Duluth, temporary while I shop for houses in Suwanee. It's a nice place, people are friendly. I left my bike in California until I get a house.
Still getting a feel for it, but Gwinnett County seems pretty nice all over. I leave the CB antenna up on my car. I wouldn't do that in Long Beach Ca.
The HD Dealer still supports Buells in nearby Augusta. Grovetown is ok, drove through there yesterday and cant believe all the new housing in the Grovetown Suburbs. Grovetown is fairly small though. As for crime havent heard a lot about any. Schools are good.
waiting to hear back but might be going to augusta to start a new job also. need to know what part of town i want to avoid and what part i might want to look for an extended stay room. if you want mike i'll send ya the guys email address that i'm going through for this job so you can see if he can do you any good.
Augusta is in Richmond County. Nearby towns or areas are Evans, Martinez, and Grovetown, they are in Columbia County. Columbia county generally has lower crime and better schools. I dont know of an extended stay place, most of our folks stay at a hotel until they can get set up.
