Just placed an order for two new Droid Xs from Verizon. They should be here in few days and I cannot wait. The wife and I have been on these LG Dare's for a while and I have really been wanting a smart phone with all the traveling I do.
Anyone have one of these yet? If so, how do you like the big display? I held one and I quite like the bright display and large screen.
I have no idea how the aps work on the droid market. I was using BitPim to access our LG Dares for ringtones and music and such but I was told I may not have to worry about that at all with these phones. Just plug the micro SD card in the laptop and add music and files to it and pop it back in the phone.
The majority of the reviews that I have seen for the X have been very positive, and while the EVO 4G phone looks just as awesome, we cannot get much Sprint coverage out here. I do like the price of their plans better than Verizon though.
i use Appbrain to get apps on my htc desire. instead of browsing on the phone the site lists apps available, you add them to a list and setup appbrain on the phone, then sync with the appbrain site and the apps are downloaded and installed. very easy to use.
I have the Motorola Droid and as far as the Market Place goes, it cant be any easier. Just click on the icon for the Market Place on you home screen, select the app you want and it will download. For music, you dont have to remove you SD card. Just plug your data cord from phone to USB port on computer and click and drag the files you want on your phone. Or, theres an app called "doubleTwist" that syncs your itunes to your phone.
I have the original Droid and it is awesome. The Droid X looks to be even more awesome. The Android Market is very cool. Tons of useful apps. Also, you shouldn't have to pop the SD card out. Just plug the phone into your computer and mount the card. The computer will see it as another drive.
Sweet! Thanks for the tips gents. I'm very excited to get these phones. I wanted to get the Droid when it first came out but we waited and now finally our new every two has arrived just in time!
Are there any good accessories that are a "must have" like the media dock or a particular skin or case anyone recommends?
That video is misleading. It's not the "death grip" that blocks the signal, it's his index finger.
Duhhh... cell phones have had that same issue for years, it's not particular to any one brand of phone.
Try grabbing the top of your CB antenna and keying the mic... same damn thing. Tap into any circuit and watch what happens. Electrons, like water, follow the path of least resistance.
I'm not at all worried about the death grip claims. Thanks for sharing it though.
My wife and I both have enough sense not to try and engulf our hands around a massive phone when it it takes is a couple of fingers and a thumb to do the job.
My first day of Droid ownership saw the download of over 120 apps. I've since eliminated many and replaced them with many more.
When browsing the app store, do please read the reviews before downloading. People are quick to leave feedback. Don't take the first negative review at face value however. Some people aren't smart enough to figure out how to configure certain things and they post a negative review in haste without getting on the forums and finding out how to do things properly.
This forum has reviews on every app, details on how to root the device, accessories and everything else. There are other forums out there, but this one is sort of the BadWeB of them all.
That video is misleading. It's not the "death grip" that blocks the signal, it's his index finger.
Quoting myself here, for I have misspoken. For the benefit of all who are interested, I have done a bit of research on this.
The antenna on the Droid X is located at the bottom of the phone, where Mr. Deathgrip is purposefully cupping the base of the phone and surrounding it with the meat of his hand.
The source of this video is none other than Apple whose website dedicated to this issue seeks to draw attention away from it's design flaw. To be fair, they do compare several other smartphones on that site. The difference is, you really have to surround the entire bottom of the Droid X tightly in order to attenuate the signal. The iP4 merely needs to have a finger laid across the black band at the seam of the metal band which surrounds the perimeter of the phone. This is according to Apple's own site, not me.
A little perspective. These are ALL very small devices, packed with very powerful hardware and software. There will always be a way to block the signal from a wireless device, and it's up to the user to acclimate themselves to these apparent shortcomings and adjust their grip accordingly.
Apple claims to have spent over 100 million on their antenna R&D labs. So how could this have happened? Simple. The alternatives must have been worse.
Like I mentioned in another thread, I tried over and over to get my friend's iP4 to drop the signal, and no matter how either of us gripped it, we noticed no signal loss. Granted, we were in an area where the signal for both our phones is exceptionally strong. The iP4 is a big improvement over the 3GS, and it's a great device. Just not a great phone in my opinion. He still sounds like he's inside a tin can, under water.
Ugh... there were rumors that these plans were to be implemented as early as July 29, but Verizon's CFO has calmed these fears... although not alleviated them entirely.
Check out the above link to learn more. It is more likely that Verizon may move to tiered plans after the full 4G network rollout.
Guess I better begin acclimating myself to using less data... right now I'm hovering around 12GB per month.
Pwn, hopefully verizon will do for u what AT&T did for it's existing customers. Since I had AT&T unlimited data before they did away with it I'm able to keep unlimited data for as long as I like. If I go to a limited plan tho, I won't be able to go back.
We've been on the same calling plan for about 3 years now. I know they made changes to the plans within the last year or so but our rates stayed the same. A little cheaper... we shall see. I will have to change plans with this upgrade though. The good part is the hefty military discount. I believe AT&T and Sprint do the same.
Holy mackerel, that touch screen is a HUGE improvement over the original Droid. Everything loads faster, runs better, it's quite a bit bigger, and yet it weighs considerably less.
I hated giving it back to it's owner.
I found out Landstar offers some pretty deep discounts with Verizon, so I'm going to see if I can go through them without paying a penalty of some kind.
I would try and get one ordered now, the shipping delays with all smartphones this summer have been a little crazy at launch. Verizon says August 3rd all internet and phone orders ship. We are on that list. The shipping is free and overnight. We also get our upgrade discounts at our local retailer for accessories when the phones arrive so we can "try on" some new cases and such.
Verizon has a carbon fiber case that really looks awesome, as well as the rocketfish case.
I have a Samsung Saga with crappy windows mobile. I loooove the hardware but the operating system is really holding it back. I wish there was a way for me to throw android in there.
The one thing I do wish was coming with the X is the forward facing camera... everyone has their opinions on that and video calls, but when I am on TDY instructing for weeks at a time I really enjoy the precious time I get to spend on Skype with my wife and little one. I truly think Video calls will be a great thing in the future for those who would use it for reasons like this.
I have a Droid and really like it! I chose it over the Blackberry Storm 2 because of the slide-down keypad, but after the first week of owning it, I haven't used that because of the great touch screen. I really like the new Droid X because it is a slimline phone but what I'm really waiting for is the 2.2 upgrade with flash. It should be available any day now.
At the Verizon store where I got my phone, the salesman had a Droid with a beta version of the 2.2 operating system and I got to try it out and I really liked the speed. I can't wait till I get it downloaded in my Droid.
