Why offer to take it back, I would be willing to bet that less than 1 percent give the phone back or exchange for any other phone. You have to remember the type of people that bought into this, the vast majority of them don't care if it works at all, it's shiny and from Apple so it's great.
In the press conference where he announced the bumper case give away he also announced that if you are still not happy you have 30 days to return an undamaged iPhone4 for full refund and no contract.
They had to get the iPhone4 out before July on AT&T. Verizon is supposed to get the iPhone in August. I don't know what model it will be, but folks will flee AT&T if Verizon is an option.
>>>>but folks will flee AT&T if Verizon is an option.
Thus tossing the Verizon network into the same situation that AT&T has experienced.
>>>the vast majority of them don't care if it works at all, it's shiny and from Apple so it's great.
I'm in that "I don't care" category but not so much for the "shiny" or the "Apple" reasons. I like it because it does LOTS of things and does them fairly well.
It doesn't duplicate all my 4,200 contacts each time I try to synch it . . and the Apple iPhone plays really nicely with the Apple computer.
I suspect at some point I may go back to Verizon, who I was with for years. The AT&T service, as a telephone, sucks. But if Verizon had not have sucked at so many things I'd have not been looking to change in the first place.
Mobile phone service in the USA pretty much sucks on all fronts.
Is that Verizon thing official? I've had no information about it and Verizon knows I am looking at smart phones like the Droid X. Already determined that I'll do nothing until the new announced introduction of the next generation network starts in November. That announcement was (I think) a short article in Broadcast Engineering about the next gen. network plans for the popular carriers, and that Verizon will start shipping phones for this new gen. network in November. My current phone is an analog/first gen digital (not EVDO) phone, I think I can wait another few months.
And it still has little to do with Verizon, and appears that it will not even start until later than August unless things have changed since that article was written:
"One person familiar with the situation said Pegatron is scheduled to start mass producing CDMA iPhones in September. Other people said, however, that the schedule could change and the phone may not be available to consumers immediately after production begins. "
And another thing. Verizon, like anyone else, wants to sell you the equipment they ALREADY HAVE. Then when you want to upgrade before your contract is up it costs you an arm and a leg.
My friend sold the ad space to Verizon slated for August for release of the iPhone.
Now they may buy space for a product they have no contract for, but it would seem kind of a weird thing to do.
I'm only going on what I know to be true, but we'll all see companies do things that don't make sense.
Thus tossing the Verizon network into the same situation that AT&T has experienced.
AT&T's problems aren't bandwidth. It's coverage. Verizon DOESN'T have the same issue AT&T has. I don't care how many orange banners AT&T stretches over the US, they simply don't have the same coverage.
You are right FB. I know I don't have much luck with reception on my AT&T phone while at Buelltoberfest. I typically have to ride south to the top of the mountain to call home. Others there with Verizon don't seem to have the same trouble.
I currently have a Blackberry on the Verizon network. I was an Alltel customer till Verizon bought Alltel. I have not been particularly pleased with Verizon customer service, but I don't have any complaints with the network coverage or service.
I have decided I wanted a different phone than my Blackberry. The Blackberry rules when comes to email, but it falls short to me in other smartphone features, primarily web surfing.
I went in to a Verizon store and asked them when the iPhone would be available on their network. The person I spoke with did not know, but did not deny they were getting it. He did tell me the Android phones were superior, however, and the only people who would be happier with an iPhone were people who used Apple computers. Guess what kind of computer I am typing this on. So, I guess I will keep waiting and see what happens. In a year I can switch from Verizon if I wish or get a different phone and stay with them if I chose. All I know is I will be moving away from my Blackberry. Kind of makes me sad. The Blackberry has been solid as a rock, but the screen is too small and surfing the web on it really tries my patience.
Did Steve Jobs lie? I don't really care. I expect to be lied to by people trying to sell me something.
My iPhone 4 is flawless and is a massive upgrade from the 3G it replaced. Call quality has been great. No issues there. This thing does so much cool stuff I'm not sure it could get any better. But, it will.
Verizon was great for the 4 years I was on them, but everytime I crossed a border, the phone was useless. With AT&T at least my family and work can still reach me. In the 2 years I've been on AT&T I've used my phone in Canada multiple times, Europe twice, mexico and Colombia once. Having instant ($$) access is priceless. I'll stay with AT&T for now. IF Verizon picks up the iPhone will be on a GSM network? Pretty sure not???
have any of you iphone haters tried the death grip to see if yalls do this?
I ask because I am watching the press release on the web site and it shows non Iphones doing this too, and my non iphone 4 does it if i grip it like that as well as an old sprint instinct and it also did it as well. So why is it that the iphone 4 is so bad again?
(Message edited by firebolt020283 on July 18, 2010)
besides that he not only is giving all of the iphone4 owners a free case he is also fixing the software, and if those people still don't like it they can get a refund. sounds pretty simple to me.
So why is it that the iphone 4 so bad about the iphone 4 again?
Because the Iphone 4 is for the most part the only phone that does this. The older models, plus 99% of every other phone on the market will not lose signal enough for it to be measurable to the point that calls get dropped.
My 2 year old HTC Touch Pro does not lose any reception (I can see the actual dB reading not a signal bar), regardless of how I hold it.
It's kinda funny to me, the way that non-iPhone users laugh at, tease, and criticize iPhone users the way that Jap bike and Harley riders laugh at, tease, and criticize Buell riders. Take it for a real test ride and it's great. Heck, I even put my service manual PDF on mine and read it when I need torque specs or a wiring diagram and such.
I've never had any issues with my 3g or 3gs iPhone. I use it like a mini computer.
I can do everything from play games on it to tune and intonate my bass (with a GREAT strobe tuner). It's amazing what it can do.
I've been in the IT biz for 25 years. I'm Microsoft certified, work for a Microsoft Gold Partner, and I've put my hands on nearly every piece of hardware that will run a Microsoft OS.
My PC of choice.....Apple. I have three of them in my house and two iPhones.
I'm not a fan boy....I'm a tech geek. The Mac OS is fantastic. Built on top of BSD UNIX. It has a small footprint and is very resource friendly.
If I develop a need for a Windows machine, I can fire up a virtual machine and run it within OS X or I can simply boot my machine into Windows 7.
The most interesting thing about OS X is there is seldom ever a need to reboot it. Memory management is excellent.
As an IT guru, I know how much better it is when you have software written for specific hardware versus the Windows philosophy of trying to be a "One OS fits all". No matter how much you try, it's impossible to control the quality of all the vendors who supply hardware for Windows OSes.
I'm happy with my Blackberry 8330. Usable buttons (still don't trust the touch-screen technology..and I know I'm rough on things), a trackBALL that actually works compared to most of my friends' trackPADs, a fully functional phone (although I still have a gift for finding dead spots), and with the 8GB card....a ton of music on board for cutting grass, riding Buells, or practicing my sadly out-of-shape archery "skills" (hey...at least I didn't lose any arrows LOL). Not my first choice for web surfing...but it's there if I need it and it works well for what it is (it's a phone; I know it's gonna have a small screen and I'm OK with that).
As far as Jobs goes...it's a *phone*. Not a car, or a truck, or a mortgage lender, or a deepwater oil rig gone bad. It's a couple hundred dollars, not thousands and thousands of bucks.
A *phone*.
Really? Does it matter this much?
Get a refund. Get a different phone, or a different carrier, or both...and move on.
Good thing I brought my lunch, because waiting for that meal will likely leave me very hungry.
I played with my friends iP4 and neither of us could get it to drop a call or lose signal no matter how we held it.
iP4 is a great device if you don't care about it being open source, or the fact that you can only get your apps from one place. Like I said, great device. As a phone, compared to mine, it makes you sound like you're underwater in a tin can. This doesn't mean you can't understand what's being said, just that it sounds funny.
BOTH of our phones (iP4 and Droid) sound BETTER when using a bluetooth headset. My girlfriend's elder children both have AT&T phones, different models, and when they are talking to me, they BOTH sound awful... I'm getting them new phones on Verizon once their contracts run out.
Customer service SUCKS DONKEY BALLS at EVERY wireless provider. Navigating the endless automated menus that have no bearing on the reason you are calling, then finally getting a drone to read a script to you based on what they think you said to them... elevate the issue, get a manager and find they ALSO cannot understand what you want, no matter how articulate you are.
My theory is, the customer service nightmare you invariably encounter EVERY time you switch service providers is the BIGGEST deterrent to anybody who is thinking of changing from one to the other.
Even the damned websites are set up to trick you into getting different services you don't want or need.
Once you find a plan with a price you like and the features you want, I bet you're not likely to switch, no matter how good the other guys' phones are.
To return ever so briefly to the topic, "Is Steve Jobs a liar", I guess the short answer would be "no".
It seems small minds can never resist taking cheap shots, but may I suggest a more appropriate question might be, "Is Steve Jobs the smartest exec. in tech"?
According to Fortune magazine, the answer would be "yes".
Without attempting to split hairs, Steve said the iPhone 4 is a great phone, works better than the iPhone 3Gs, can lose signal in weak areas in a death grip, and will work anywhere with a free Bumper.
As the first kid on my block with one, I agree. In my location it works and sounds much better than my old three gee ess, even without the bumper, not to mention the many other improvements which are very significant to me: camera, video, improved screen, multitasking, etc.
Frankly, I feel privileged to be living in the "Jobs" era, and to use his elegant, wonderful machines for work, (Mac Pro desktop), and play.
They inspire me, and enhance my life every day, and I am very grateful.
