I can still remember vividly where and what I was doing the first time I heard 'Sultans of Swing'.
I was driving a truck over Merrylands Railway Bridge in Sydney and I had my ghetto blaster adhered to the dashboard with packing tape.
I stopped just off the bridge and drank it in.
Next day I made my way in to the city and the import record store on Wynyard Subway Station ramp and paid an exorbitant price for a copy of the self-titled album.
I still pause and feel good when they pop up on my cable music channel rotation.
It took me a while to stumble onto it, but His latest album - Get lucky - is playing in the studio now.
It's a collection of anti-headbanger music, with beautiful melodies and traditional northern English and Celtic tones - and often melancholic themes.
There's even one that will become a funeral favourite for anyone of Scots heritage.
And there's the occasional soft-rocky number in the mix.
It's the first or the last album of the night, but if you like beautiful music to work to and write to - it's a special.
If you are a Knopfler fan then his best recent album (in my humble opinion) has to be the collabaration with Emmy Lou Harris on All The Road Running http://www.emmylou.net/atrr.html
I haven't been as keen on his later solo albums but still buy everything he has released so far Ragpickers Dreams and Sailing to Philedephia are both great albums too
The classic Knopfler concert for me must be the Nelson Mandela concert in Wembley, London when he was with Dire Straits and had Eric Clapton on stage playing rythmn guitar!
Always liked Knopfler's style- another great guitarist who sounds a little like him is Bill Frisell. "gone, just like a train" is one of my favorite recordings from him- like Knopfler on acid...
Trojan, Ragpickers Dream & Sailing to Philadelphia are my 2 top choices from him also. I was less impressed with what followed, particularly Shangri-La which I didn't rate much.
If the new album is up there with the other two, I'll be well pleased.
Mr_Grumpy - A few years ago a friend and his wife took me to see Knopfler in Bordeaux during the Shangri-La tour. I still rate it as one of the best concerts I've ever attended. Fantastic music and crowd. And the CD is one of my favorites. Interesting what music strikes a cord in each of us. Now sadly I just discovered I was in Munich a few weeks ago while Knopfler was playing there and missed it because I did not check out his tour schedule. Even worse I was with the same friend that had taken me to the Shangri-La concert so I blew an opportunity to return a favor. I'll be kicking myself over that one for a long time.
Funny to see this thread. I just picked this up out of the library a few days ago on a lark and have been listening to it daily. Beautiful, wonderful music. First time through I was like "what the heck is this", particularly since I haven't heard any of his solo work for a while. But once I got aligned with it - I fell in love. Just don't be expecting money for nothing - this is sweet stuff.
Mark Knopfler is one of my biggest musical influences; he's just awe-inspiring. Saw him with Dire Straits when they were at their peak, but he totally blew me away when I saw Clapton, and Knopfler was his rhythm guitarist. He drove that band like it was a Ferrari, and had a big old smile on his face the whole time!
