May have to open the bleeder on the caliper itself. The piston itself doesn't have a slot down the center of it does it? If so, it may be one that screws back home.

The piston needs to be rotated while you are applying pressure. There is a tool to do this, it is worth buying. If not, you can use a pin spanner.

tried that too opened the bleeder and got a little out but no real movement. The piston does have 2 notches in the face and I have tried turning it and got nothing. is there a "correct" way to do it?

You need to apply pressure to the piston while you are turning it. The tool does both at the same time, which is why it is worth buying. Trying to turn the piston and compress it without the tool is possible, but a real PITA. You can get a reasonably priced one from Lisle.

+10 on Azxb9r, the piston must be rotated while being compressed, like screwing it back in.

Yea if you have a Sears close by they carry one made by Lisle tools, fits on the end of a 3/8 ratchet.

If you have an AutoZone, the caliper tools are part of the loaner tool program.

The "correct" way also includes holding the brake pedal depressed and opening the bleeder before retracting the piston, to avoid pushing contaminated brake fluid back through the ABS valves and pump.
