I do not want this to become another tit for tat thread. Lets talk about the things that work for you with it. I just picked up one this weekend. The big use for me is gonna be iBooks. A close second will be video/movies on the go. Another APP that hit the high list is Zinio's digital magazine subs. You got to see the list of cycle rags available! CycleWorld digital for $12 a year, can read on my iPad and my PC. |

Ditto. I got one for Vick for the iBooks. We were both skeptics at first and it took us about 7 seconds to be hooked. We've just done two road trips and it's fabulous in the car while traveling . . . be it for maps or watching YouTube videos of 70's rock bands. It synchs with the media system in her car and it rocks. |

We don't really have the budget for one now, but I think Netflix will be the thing that might push me over the edge to get one. Supposedly, Netflix for the IPad will be out this summer, and it will change everything... |

You guys stop, you're making me want one of these things BAD! I can even get one unlocked here in the local stores, just like my iPhone (not the 4 - yet)! |

Does it have a GPS built into it? |

>>>Does it have a GPS built into it? No. It uses the 3G signal but that seems to get my correct position within a few feet. You can punch in "current location" and destination and get times and a rough (by car, public transportation, foot or motorcycle) route. There are a couple high zoot GPS apps for purchase. |

The 3G iPad has the same GPS chipset that the iPhone 3G and 3GS have. One of the touted differences between the the two versions(WiFi vs 3G). |

Slight clarification on the GPS chip. It is a A(ssisted)-xxxxx chip. That being one that uses the cell towers for further refinement of location. Much like a stand alone GPS that is WAAS enabled. |

I don't know any of that terminology. I know it works well. |

You are correct. It works and very good at that. |

I almost bought an unlocked 64gig/3G today, but with the current exchange rate is was just over $1K, which less than what they're going for on ebay. I should've got one a couple of weeks ago when the euro/$ rate was more favorable. |

The things work really well as a thin client... so I wouldn't rule out a "less memory" version either. |

Supposedly, Netflix for the IPad will be out this summer I thought this was out at launch. It's the Netflix app for iPhone/Touch that is being held up... |

Ah! I have the IPhone, not the IPad, so I didn't look past the "is it there for my platform yet" question. Thanks for the clarification! It's probably ready to go, and they are just trying to figure out how to manage the bandwidth they know it will clobber. |

Would'st clobber none, if they made it a wi-fi only delivery (like Apples FaceTime) |

It'd still clobber the netflix side... right now you have to be in front of a TV and a WII that you registered... so you basically have to be home. With an IPhone, you could watch a movie anywhere there is a hotspot. I suspect their bandwidth needs will increase by about 10x when the IPhone app is out... at least that's what I would be telling my network operations guys to prepare for if I was working there. |

People look at me funny when I walk around with a laptop in my pocket. As a result, there are a lot of times I am 'stuck' somewhere without one. The IPhone is nearly always with me... |

The 3G has a GPS chip? I thought that was only in the 3GS. The only netflix app I have is to update my instant watch queue. If they release a player, I will never get any work done at all. |

Too cool! http://www.macworld.com/article/151815/2010/06/net flix_announces_app_for_iphone.html "Netflix subscribers will be able to start watching a video on their TV, computer, or iPad, and then resume watching later on a different device, including the iPhone" |

Has anybody tried wrapping it in a big ol' ziplock and mounting it to their bars yet? |

They make RAM mounts for the iPad now, so it shouldn't be hard to put on the bars, but I don't see why you would, the iTouch fits better. |

It is my understanding that both have the gps chip. It was the the addition of the compass in the GS that really set them apart in functionality. Back on topic. Those magazines I used to buy in a paper format. Zinio is a vast improvement from a few years back. A good thing is to have it running on your main computer as well as the iPad. Opens up the world of back issues. The iPad App is working on this as a stand alone thing. Do your orders on the PC or Mac and they will show up on your iPad. Still have to download them on both. No longer tethered to needing web connection to read. It is my understanding that you get three downloads of each purchase. So download one goes to my desktop. This allows for the ability to print something out, with a water mark though. Download two goes to my iPad to travel with. No more waiting room fodder! Look, iPromise not to attach the iPad to my steering wheel either. So no reading while driving. I say this, tongue in cheek, cause ya know some crazy commuter is gonna do it. Another thing I like about the iPad/Zinio relationship. That little blue box that appears in the text. Click it! Safari fires up and takes you on a side trip. Neat in that, no more scribbling web addys for later investigation. Did someone mention the 2400 publications available? |

For you guys that have them, wifi only or 3G, what apps are you running and which ones do you use the most? |

Can anyone think of a practical business use? I really know nothing of the device. |

"Can anyone think of a practical business use?" Our VPs are asking us to support the onces they have purchased for themselves. They certainly think they have business value. |

Hmmm, my Nokia Navigator phone has a gps integrated in it, it connects to the internet too, & I can make actual phone calls with it! As for ibooks, if I want to read a book (all the time) well I'll read a book thanks. I have thousands of them & their batteries never go flat! & I can read them when the plane is taking off or landing. I'm sorry, the whole thing makes me think of NASA spending squillions to develop a pen that writes in space when a pencil does the job. I guess it's one of those polarising gizmos, that's either the bee's knees for you or a complete waste of raw materials & energy. I find myself in the second category. |

I am not an early adopter. I never have been. I waited to start getting on the internet until I could get a 2400 baud modem. I put off getting a cell phone for years because of the expense. I wasn't sold on GPS's for a long time. Now I can't imagine not being on the internet regularly, or not having a cell phone or a GPS. Some things I still haven't gotten around to getting. I don't have an iPod if you can imagine that. I just prefer the radio. Now XM, that is something I'd like on my bike. Anyway, I haven't figured out why I'd love to have an iPad yet, but I may one day. Hey, I even like texting now. |
