This article is about an acquaintance from the Concours Owners Group (COG) and his accident. He is OK and up and moving around. Lucky guy. Paulie is a real nice fellow and should recover remarkably well. He was planning to challenge Tramp's scoot for mileage. http://www.newsminer.com/view/full_story/8373648/a rticle-Florida-motorcyclist-injured-in-collision-w ith-moose-on-Alaska-road |

if thats a lot of miles in very few years, unless that is on of the old concours's sounds like he will mostly be alright though, which is a good thing |

Yeah it's an older Concours. Paulie is going to be fine. Has several fractured vertebrae, but no spinal cord damage. |

I was going to post on the threads about hitting deer that there are bigger obstacles out there. Not to minimize that because I hit a dog on a small street bike that endo'd me, but hitting something that weighs a ton and NEVER retreats is a whole different animal. Every year we have a couple people maimed or killed by moose up here trying to pet or feed them. They look big and stupid (and they are) but have NO sense of humor. This gentlemen is very lucky. Prayers for a speedy recovery. |

One of the biggest dangers of riding in Newfoundland (which is one of my FAVORITE riding destinations) is the HUGE number of moose on that island. Seems a couple hundred years ago some genius decided that moose would be a good game animal to release on an island who's largest predator is the red fox and the Canadian Lynx... Needless to say, they've taken over. There are rumors of wolf packs being seen crossing over to the island in the winter when the water in the Strait of Bell Isle is frozen, so maybe there's hope. All I know is that I've never taken a trip to Newfoundland without seeing at LEAST one moose. Worse time is probably just after sunset. As one old timer told me, you haven't lived till you've gone around a darkened corner and see a pair of glowing orange eyes 11 feet off the ground in front of you... |

I saw a video on the interweb of a scientist with a moose head on and making aggressive motions during the rut and a real moose took offense and the guy had to quickly shift to submissive motions! Luckily, his moose head didn't make him look female, ha ha. |

Newfies (the dog breed) are just big cocker spaniels. Nothing to worry about. Unless you have a fear of being drooled upon...? |

Sounds like Newfoundland needs to start an open season on moose. I hear they're good eating! |

There is a "Moose Season" in Newfoundland. Not sure what the rules are though. They've driven out most of the native caribou. There are caribou on the island, but you'll probably never seen one unless you're REALLY lucky. |

Newfoundland is the ONLY place I've been where the grocery stores had canned "Moose Stew" on the shelves... |
