Ride in hot weather that is.

I'm guessing you southern state Guys and Girls are most likely used to it.

Its a "heat" wave here in New England.
Yesterday I rode to work, 60 mile commute one way. Morning ride nice -68, Afternoon temp 101 and dew point pushing 70+. Cant be good for the old air cooled mill? Thats the hottest weather I have ever rode in.(full gear made it almost unbearable)
Whats too "hot" for you southern riders?

For me its not so much how hot it is but how long I'm stuck in traffic.I live in Metro Atlanta and if you have business in town you can't get away from it.
If I can keep moving I'm ok.I try to run errands in the morning so I can be in the AC during the heat of the day.

if the tires melt it is too hot!

LOL

I am not southern and I hate the heat. (I coach an play hockey so spring, fall and winter I spend 5 days a week in an ice rink and my thermostat is 55 during the winter)

But I have a mesh Joe Rocket and it works great! Even crashes well too, don't ask...

I have a River Road mesh jacket and a pair of Firstgear mesh gloves.Thats my only concession to the heat.
It just blows my mind to see people riding in shorts and tee shirts.I guess they will have to go down and lose some skin to get it.

I've lived in both extremes - hot and cold. The best solution was move somewhere with a moderate climate.

Unfortunately for you, the best way to deal with it is to get used to it. Get aclimated. I know you guys are having a record heat spike so that's kinda not gonna work. Sorry.

Keep exposed skin covered, not sealed, covered.
Stay hydrated.
Get wet.
Choose a route that will let you keep moving if possible.
Get wet.
Watch for signs of overheating. Muscle cramps, headache, nausia and dizziness. If you experience any of these symptoms, get off the bike and in the shade stat. Drink water and pour some on you. It's gonna take an hour or so to get your core temp down. If you push it after the first signs, your judgement will become impared and you'll think you can make it. You will bleed.

Perforated leather. Believe it or not, it's cooler than a Tee shirt (as long as you are rolling anyway). I have a Joe Rocket "Sonic" (all leather first generation) jacket that is just fantastic.
I've ridden in 117F weather and it was as comfortable as you can be, in uhhh... 117 degree weather.

Ya in my younger years(Not that im even old, really) on the 92 Katana,I know crap bike for sure.
Riding with only a helmet and jeans seemed to be normal. I wont even ride "local" without jacket and gloves on.

Older and wiser, the thought of laying down on the moving sanding drum, with only a T shirt is a bad idea.

My jacket is nylon mesh, was nice while moving but stopped it was still hot.
How much hot weather idleing will the xb take before overheating in those temps?
For the most part stayed moving but a couple lights and right leg burn it felt close. Never went into spark skip mode luckily.

Thanks for the tips!

How rude of me not to include/ question hot weather Countries in opening post

I got some interesting looks today when I went into the local Wally World. The reading on the bank said 98F. I wear Alpine Star zip out mesh overpants, and my Buell Adventure Jacket with light mesh gloves.

Is it hot? Yep. But it was even hotter with the sun shining directly on my tee shirt before I got my jacket back on.

I only had to stop putting my gear on three times to explain to people that it was actually cooler with it on when I am moving than it was to stand there in the sunlight without it.

Funny, I'm from Alabama and I'm in Boston, MA on business.
Everyone is talking about how hot it is and I just have to laugh.
This is perfect riding weather to me. 90+ with only mild humidity... it's nice.
I really wish I had my bike up here right now.

I ride all year long down in Mobile, AL. We get 90-100+ heat with oppressive humidity every summer.
The rain keeps me off the bike more than the heat, Mobile is one of the wettest cities in the country.
For hot weather I wear mesh gear (jacket and pants).
Sure it's not as tough as leather but it's only got to work once.
However, if this is as hot as it gets up here, then there's no sense buying mesh gear.
The best advice for hot weather riding, avoid traffic like the plague!!!
Take alternate routes if necessary, just keep moving.
If you get stuck in traffic you're going to suffer.

Florida heat can get bad. I'll never bitch about it again after being in Phoenix. It was ridiculous out there.

Someone here said it best though..."I'd rather sweat than bleed."

I'm in central Massachusetts. It's hot; but this heat is preferable to the sub-freezing temps of January. I have to wear lighter gear when it gets hot, but I like that.It beats the hell out of having to wear electric clothing to commute to work.
Like a good Marine, you have to Improvise, Adapt and Overcome.
Oh; and HTFU!

I found by accident last year as I was leaving WV Buell Rally where the temperature was well into the 90's, that if your Buell Hydration pack is filled with ice water and it springs a leak at the lower fitting, your lower anatomy will not suffer from the heat.

At least in the winter you can flip a switch and the cold disappears. Not so with this heat. That company still hasn't emailed me about that air conditioned motorcycle jacket liner : (

You have to make choices.

Sweat or bleed.

I never really have a big problem with pref leather, if I don't stop moving. Its best to break a small sweat then the keep moving.

I used to throw my jacket and helmet into the ice freezers @ gas station while I went inside and re-hydrated.

There is nothing like a cool leather jacket and a frosty mug helmet on a hot summer day.

I like it hot..............
Still have the winter liner in my heavy Joe Rocket #21 jacket..........cause it's almost to cool in the A.M. ride with out it. Ride home ain't bad. Bike is in the shade and jacket is cool from being in an AC room. Suit up and ride home............no problem, cept the days I have to stop for fuel. No dicking around there..............

As long as you are moving at 50 mph or more it is not too bad, but if you are stuck in traffic it sucks. And yes... it is bad for the air cooled motor (sitting in traffic).

I find that a mesh jacket is actually cooler than riding with no jacket...and the June bugs and Cicadas dont hurt as much either.

I'm guessing you southern state Guys and Girls are most likely used to it.
Mostly used to it I guess.
Wait until winter for my version of this same thread.
Heat we got, winter y'all got.
I hate cold.
I love it hot, but only to an extent.
Once it's really hot down this way, it's really humid as well, that's when it gets oppressive, and riding suffers.
I go from riding just to ride, to riding just to get there, today will be one of those riding just to get there days.
Most of the riding you'll do for pleasure these kinds of days, will be early, or late in the day.

But I'd rather deal with the heat, than deal with a "real" winter.

Amen. It's now July in Texas. I know hot. Mesh works well, but I'll often take the Road Pig out in j
eans and a T-shirt. Always gloves (perforated leather right now), boots & helmet (sometimes a 1/2 helmet).

If I put on the mesh jacket, I'll usually wear one of those "wicking" T-shirts underneath and wet it down with water at every opportunity--sort of a rolling swamp cooler. Works like a charm if you don't mind arriving damp...

I only wish we were getting rain here in MD.

Frederick, yesterday, tied for the highest temp - 106. And it's HUMID. Ugh. And forget barefoot - the grass is dry enough it'll skewer your feet.

I spent some "me" money for the first time in a while. Went to the local Metric shop and got some Joe Rocket mesh - my Buell mesh is black, and soaks up heat despite being mesh. So, got a hi-vis Rocket mesh jacket...and a pair of mesh pants.

I know. Seems counterintuitive on the pants...but they've got good armor and seem to breathe really well. I will find out tonight when I ride up to Gettysburg. Only thing I see as a possible issue is, no heat shield on the right calf - which is where I have no sensation from the accident and skin graft. I may put in a heat shield patch; we'll see. Good side? I won't feel the pain if it does burn me. Bad side? I won't feel the pain if it burns me...so I won't think to move my leg out.

Mesh & stay hydrated...on really hot days I'll carry a few bottles of water not only to drink but pour onto my t-shirt under a mesh jacket cools until you are dry (about 1/2 hr) then wet the shirt again...

I'm with the mesh gear too and find less crowded roads to ride on so you keep moving. I rode the last 2 days to work and you can feel the heat baking off of route 95. Tomorrow I'll be taking the back way home........TWISTIES!

Emigrate to England : ) You know it is summer because the rain is a bit warmer and you have to clean flies of your visor!
