I like the "buy another tuber" idea. you'll have plenty of spares and they can be had for the cost of a NOS engine (ballpark I'd bet). |

"you could do like the chopper people like to do with our bikes and take a really nice sportster and strip it down and take its engine." use the $ made from parting out the bike to do a nice street build on the motor. (lighten the crank, XB top end, Backer smooth shift kit, ect) |

The engine in my S2, with heavy flywheel and Thunderstorm top end, is just as strong feeling as my stock S1W with factory Thunderstorm engine. The heavy flywheel doesn't make as much of a difference as you'd think...other than the aforementioned inertia during shifts. The S1W does seem a little more peaky...but again, it's a much lighter bike, too. |

Thanks, fellas- The heavier flywheel of my S2 may likely had a hand in its longevity. I'd rather stay with the older sportster components, including an early style head, hence my NOS thought. I'd like to simply drop a fresh mill in, along with all new mounts, ties, isolators, and suspension (found brand new in plastic shock on ebay for $80-), and keep it a stripped (figuratively 'chopped') tuber....for longevity and reliability. I'm now thinking along Glitch's idea of a stock Sportster mill, and I'll call HD and some shops to see if such an animal exists....while keeping my eyes peeled for a cheap low-end that I could B&B (bench & build) over a few months. |

I'll check my end, but most everything I've found so far have been used engines. Have you checked salvaged bikes? |

Thanks, Glitch- I may do just that, however I was hoping to order something absolutely fresh and unrun form a dealer. This is one of the reasons I'm posting here as opposed to in the classifieds: It would be interesting to our community as a whole to ascertain availability of fresh mills for tubers. |

Quoted from another forum: To buy a new motor or set of cases from HD you have to send in the old cases, or at least the portion with the VIN. We've done it many times. The new one comes in with the same VIN. Might be worth a call to HD, if you don't mind losing your old engine. Man, I'd love to see the autopsy report on your old engine! |

You can send in your engine to HD and they will completly re Freshen your motor! They can replace everything that has wear! I Read, in I believe Hot Bike where they sent in an old motor to the HD Factory and for something like 2 Grand they will replace damn near everything and what is not replaced machined to spec. |

Thanks, all. I'm interested in NOS engines: all metals brandy-new, no post-dealer miles. |

You can send in your engine to HD and they will completly re Freshen your motor! May want to check into this, last I knew the Sportster engine wasn't included in the H-D rebuild program, the only engine exempt from the program. |

Does H-D have any race-only Buell engines left in the back room, no numbers stamped, etc.? |

Thanks for the clarification Glitch! Didn't realize that! When I read the article, they didn't mention that detail and too bad because it was something I was considering doing in the future! And sorry if this is a stupid question but what is Tramp refering to when he says NOS? (New Operating System)??? |

You can buy new Sporty mills, but only current production units. That's how it's been for years. The 04+ cases are all wrong for tuber mounts. Do the XB engine. Do it. Do it. A little machining and the magic can commence. |
