Ok, so I know most start out rebuilding flathead Briggs engines when they're kids, but I jumped right to the small block Chevys and Pontiac V8s, so... My lawnmower is a 6.5hp Briggs & Stratton. I beat the hell out of it. It sounds like it tossed a connecting rod bearing. I was stuffing it into the woods (like I said, I beat it), it started going "clank clank clank". I turned it off thinking something was stuck up in the blade, nothing. So I emtied the bag and tried to start it. It won't run, though it kind of tries to get going, and it makes that same clanking noise when it turns over. So, the question is... Do I fix or just buy a new one? And if I fix, do I need any special tools for these engines? I borrowed my neighbors Honda OHC... boy it was nice... |

The first thing I would check is the flywheel pin. If you sheared it, the timing will be off and it wont start. If its something worse, rebuild it yourself. Its cheap for the parts, and waaaaay less complicated than the Chev V8. You could put a louder muffler on there and let your neighbors know when your mowing your lawn. I have a Toro 2 stroke that I can hold a normal volume conversation while mowing the lawn. Quietest mower I have ever owned. (Message edited by gunut75 on July 01, 2010) |

I got the same dilema. Mower won't start unless it is primed a lot then just shuts off. I also hear a horrible noise from the engine. The neighbor has a nice toro |

Crank is probably bent-not worth fixing. |

Your kids's kids could be rebuilding that engine and you would still have spent less than a honda mower...yeah, they are super nice...but they damn well better be. I worked at home depot for a summer while in college. People would "rent" the $800 model, cut their grass and bring it back a few hours later. Home depot must have lost a fortune marking those used things down for resale. |

His was a Craftsman mower with a Honda engine - the self-propelled aspect was a little slow for my taste, but it bagged so good... My Toro clumps up at the front of the bag but this one would get the whole bag full, back to front. |

Check the blade mount on the bottom end of the crank. The blade is part of the overall flywheel for the system. If it busted the mount key or just came loose when you jammed it into the woods you will get the same noise / symtoms. DAMHIK Should be a cheap easy fix. Oh ya, before you turn it upside down to take a look, remove the wire from the spark plug, JIC. |

When I turn the blade by hand I can feel the compression of the engine and hear it release through the muffler as the exhaust valve opens. I couldn't seem to get it to make the claking noise that way, though - but I didn't try spinning it too awful fast either. It also doesn't feel broken under there - it's all pretty solid feeling - no slack. |
