Chicago area laborer's union went on strike yesterday at 5:00pm. They want 4% increase each year for the next 3 years. Right now they make $34.75/hour. What a bunch of crap. I'm thankful I have a job and can put food on my table. Why do these people have this sense of entitlement. You are entitled to nothing...you earn everything. Let the discussion begin... |

Right now they make $34.75/hour. That's just wages ON THE CHECK. With the benefits package I bet it's up around $60.00/hour. |

My company deals with trade unions daily. If you think the laborers are bad, you would really get upset with the fitters and sheetmetal workers. Both have had $3.00 an hour raises every year for the the past 6 years. Our hourly cost per hour is around $81.00 including taxes. I was just recently looking at an old job proposal from 9 year ago, the cost was $50.00 per hour then. Construction work in Chicago area has been slow for the past 5 years but the raises keep forging ahead. There are very few private sector jobs that have kept pace with the trade unions. I am all for people making decent wages however, the Chicago unions have made it very difficult to remain competitive on a national and international basis for our manufacturing. |

Yeah them unions really helped the big 3 auto makers produce some fine autos over the last 40 years.Japanese vehicles last 3 times as long.I wonder why that is?Because we were busy paying the unions to make them all happy. Now that our economy has pretty well dwindled down to nothing.I am just curious how those unions are liking it now?Well we know how they like it.They're setting back wanting even more money. But what about everyone else who would just like to be working?I am glad I never had a "big brother" watching my back.I was raised to pull my own weight.Screw any and all american work force unions. You boys need to pick up the slack, shut the eff up and makes us proud by making a good product. Are the good times really over for good? When DID a ford and a chevy last ten years like they should? Have they ever?NO... |

Let me get this straight...the base pay alone gives them a gross yearly wage of 72K+ and they are going on STRIKE??? What the hell do they do where they should be paid that much money?? Or am I mis interpreting the "laborer's" part. (In my neck of the woods a laborer is an unskilled person doing a job that requires not much more than a strong back)..maybe in Chicago it includes doctors and lawyers and engineers and such... Reminds me of the guy on the GM assembly line that got paid 52.00 an hour plus benefits to put two pop rivets in a door with an auto load counterbalanced pneumatic tool... That is STOOPID!!!! overpaid and underproductive..... |

see this has to be the dumbest crap ever. There are all of kinds of unemployed americans who would love to make half of what these people are making and these jack a**es are complaining about not getting paid enough. It just goes to show you what is wrong with this country. They should all loose there jobs so that the unemployed people who can't afford to feed there families can have them. |

One thing to note is that the Chicago area laborers typically only work 9-10 months out of the year. Most of them get laid off over the winter (collecting unemployment). Personally I don't think that should be a factor in wage negotiations but the union officials think otherwise. |

I am an ex-union member. IL is NOT a right to work state. Generally, that means that a non-union worker cannot be put to work on the same jobsite as a union worker. After all, he/she who gets paid less, and costs less to do the same amount of work, will still have a job when layoffs come. Because IL is not a right to work state, unions still have a foothold. They can control the speed up and slow down of work through political leverage, because nobody else can be hired. Just drive on some roads in IL, and you will see that leverage being used to inflate budget for the state. And thats just the beginning. I have reasons for not being in IL unions anymore. |

Japanese vehicles last 3 times as long. that has a lot more to do with management chosen dwell times and voltages for the anti-rust treatment than the "workers". The anti-rust works great, unless you save .006 cents per car by lowering voltage, etc. Not labors fault. The rest of your bitching has merit though.... carry on. GM labor didn't invest money in building plants in China to build cars. Management does. The idea that that technology transfer could have bad results, never seems to have occurred to GM management. They keep crowing about how many Buicks they sell in China... wait until the cars made at "general li's nephew's factory with no taxes and safety rules" (whatever brand name that is ) out sell GM here. U.S. workers make the best cars with the best productivity. Better than Japan. Your data is behind the times. ( they might be doing so in non union shops...but it's American Workers, by golly! ) Labor unions saved the U.S. worker from exploitation by evil industrialists. ok, that was in the 19th century, and now many unions are marxist political groups, but surely you don't have a problem with that? The SEIU acts as our glorious leaders enforcement arm, and with it's Acorn ( recently renamed to protect the guilty ) division, launder vast sums of taxpayer money. How could you do that without unions? Where would the paid protesters come from to make such pretty images on the unions controlled news media? etc.etc. ( oh, yeah, how do I get that laborer union ticket? That's way more than I make.....) |

They do? I know of several GM vehicles with over a million miles including a Camaro and a Silverado. I can't say the same about any Japanese brand. (Not that they don't exist) Then Toyota ended up buying back many of its late 90's/early 00's pickups due to rust issues causing a premature demise. |

Unions are a handycap and have made Americans to become lazy. look at the chinese, they are even cheaper then mexicans. good think china is far away or we would be flooded with them wanting to get a 5$ per hour job |

Hmmm funny Froggy I bought a new Toyota truck every 3 years starting in 93 through 2006 and they sat outside in our salty cold winters here. None had rusted, none had given me any problems one bit. I used them as my company service trucks. They all had several thousand miles on them before traded or sold. And BTW Toyota never sent me a letter for intent to buy back or otherwise. These things I would be made aware of considering the owner of the dealer they were bought from is a family friend. I am taken care of quite well with the brand. |

Right now they make $34.75/hour. That's just wages ON THE CHECK. With the benefits package I bet it's up around $60.00/hour. Of course under the new Obama-care plan they are going to tax your benefits as taxable income. Why do you suppose the unions get a pass on that tax? |

Then Toyota ended up buying back many of its late 90's/early 00's pickups due to rust issues causing a premature demise. Bads, Mikexlr got his letter and upon inspection by the dealer it was bought back. Not saying he didnt have miles on the thing (over 100 grand) but the Frog man is correct on that statement. The rust wasnt so much the body but the frame. |

It is well known in the four wheel drive community that some 'tacos suffered rust related frame failures...A buddy of mine had that happen to his...now it didn't happen going to the corner grocery...it happened...lets say....under "offroad" conditions...but it happened non the less. |

I don't care what you make. When 17% of the population is out of work, you are just damn glad to be working. Were I king, I'd replace every one of them out of principle. |

why do you people hate American workers? Why do you believe American works should work for less? Do I hear a tone of jealousy? Unions made Americans lazy? Sorry, but I bust my @ss everyday to do my job and do it perfect. I'm in a Union. Are you accusing me of being lazy? Funny. When I work from 6am until 3pm, usually without a break or lunch. Then the scab trade members show up, oh around 8am. Work until 11am. Take a lunch till 12:30pm, then leave by 2pm. Now tell me who's lazy. A lot of people here seem rather Anti American. Glad you side with the people that fcked this Country up. Glad you support the people that are outsourcing YOUR jobs. Pathetic really. |

Rocco, Your not taking a break or lunch is YOUR choice. I would think your union leadership would have problems with that also. Are ALL union workers lazy? Not all of them. I can attest to working with a bunch of them though. It is a fact, that there are dedicated driven folks and lazy along for the ride types, on both sides of the fence. |

Just want you all to know that: 1.I am a union elevator constructor in Philadelphia 2. An Air Force Reserve KC-10 Flight Engineer. 3. We all have choices to make in life. If you prefer to bitch and moan about everything in life that was handed to you through the hard work and sacrifice of those that came before us you are part of the problem. Dont sit there and whine like little girls about how much this dude makes compared to what you bring home. If you find that your source of income is not enough to make you happy; the only person that can change that is YOU. I make good money because I made the decision to bust my ass and work hard for it. When I am not here breaking my knuckles in buildings of steel and iron Im flying over the US or over Iraq or the A-Stan refueling bombers and fighters all day. A choice I make and a choice you too can make. So easy to fu%kin complain about bullshit. Everyone is a professional bitcher these days. Thats not what made America what it is. Hippies, liberals and bums did not make the United States the power house of the world. Hard working people with self value, perservence and a sense of pride are what make this the most loved and feared nation on the planet. (Message edited by kc10_fe on June 30, 2010) |

Hammer, I bought 6 trucks all together. Put 60,000- 90,000 on all of them. The dealer Is Gentile. The owner is childhood friend of my family's. These trucks were in severe salt all the time. If the frames were a issue of rust then by the package for rust proofing all makes try to sell you doing the paper work. I also owned or my Wife did 2 Toyota cars during that time. Sorry I got NO LETTER!!! My trucks didn't rust. |

Well Rocketsprink, if all the union members were as hardworking as you I'd be signatory to 669. The reality is otherwise. Our guys have consistently outperformed (& consequently outearned)the union crews. Some guys have left to join the union only to come back because of the silly work rules. I used to be a member but decided I could do better on my own. It has proven to be the best choice I ever made. Oh, and Kc10_fe, my hat's off to you! You've got two scarey jobs there. What do you do for fun, get shot out of a cannon? (Message edited by strokizator on June 30, 2010) |

I'm speaking from my personal experiene. You are more than welcome to call Local 281 and tell on me. I truly don't think they would care. And you're right, it is my choice. Doesn't sound like a lazy union work though. I don't care if you are union or not. It's all about work ethics. But don't blame unions for making workers lazy. Since such a small amount of workers are unionized what is the reason for all the other workers being lazy? |
