Do it!!! Don't forget to stop at Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park on day 3. It's just east of Thunder Bay.
Couple things about Canada...
Gas is more expensive there, fill up before the border crossing!
Call you insurance company! Mine (progressive) said I was covered in Canada, but I needed a Canadian insurance card, which they promptly sent me at no charge.
I am not sure what the road is, but there is a route that follows Lake Superior shore line in the U.P. I took it with a car once and it was awesome! I believe it was Lake Superior Shoreline Rd. that starts in Tahquamenon Bay. Then you could follow that to Sault Ste. Marie.
Looks like a great route. August '10 issue of RoadRunner magazine has an article by Wayne Peterson covering the Canadian side of Lake Superior. Might be worth a read. Have a safe trip, and watch for moose!
The Minnesota north shore is beautiful but the dear are thick crossing 61 at sunset. When the whitetails moved in they brought disease and killed all the caribou and most of the moose along the north shore.
well by thur in 70s and hold on 80s sat. when you head east out of rapid river on us 2, in 14 miles you will see county h13 or forest 13 turn left a much nicer road than m77 or m117 it takes you north to m28 but it goes thru a tunnel of trees type of road
I have been in a 40 degree rainstorm outside of bayfield wisconsin in july... it is not so much fun... I have always wanted to do the Superior Loop... and never am much for planning a ride too much in advance... usually a day or two before it is rush rush rush around and then go...
Since I want to take the 9 I will stay at small bed and breakfasts if I can find them on-line before I leave... I usually don't think twice and just go... but with a new bike... I can honestly say I don't even know how to change the oil on it, let alone check the oil on it... not like that has ever stopped me before...
I once got two flat tires on my truck somewhere outside of Taos... before cell phones... and hitched a ride with a weed smokin hillbilly that I couldn't understand... all I know is he grew his "shiiite" up in the mountains somewhere... (I HATE WEED BTW... alcohol was my drug of choice...)
I do have friends in Green Bay and Ashland and Minneapolis (yeah Greg, I'm talkin to you...) I can crash with on a short notice... mebbe just do Door County... in 20 years of Wisconsin, the furthest I have been is Sturgeon Bay...
Two more days of work... get up at 6 AM Friday... and just wander around for 2 to 4 days... without any specific plans... sounds just about right to me...
A few years ago we left Thunder Bay thinking we'd find a place or campground along the way home. I didn't think about it being 4th of July weekend and ended up driving all the way to the Cities. Nothing along the Northshore had vacancy. Good luck.
Nice trip. I'm from and currently live in Stevens Point. It can be pretty boring around here as far as roads go.
But since you are practically there anyway, you should stop at Bayfield and maybe enjoy Medeline Island. Its very pretty up there by Lake Superior. Its were I like to go on vacation. But have a safe trip. If you do pass through the Point area, its River Front Rendezvous this weekend. Which is mainly a huge 3 day party downtown on the Wisconsin River. Its worth checking out.
P.S. I thought da Turdy Point Buck was from Banana's at Large?
