I have a vacation with the Family planned for mid July. I have decided we will be in the Royal Gorge area of CO and I have two options for camping at KOA's. Cotapaxi or Royal Gorge/Canon City. Has anyone stayed at either place and can rate one over the other. It will be me and the wife along with our two boys (9&15). We will be Camping with 3 tents and a large canopy. We will be using it as a base camp for (rafting, hiking, trail riding, train, Royal Gorge, etc...) Please reply back with any reviews on the KOA's or other options. |

Slowride, I have not stayed at either. I know the one in Cotapaxi is on the Arkansas River and the one by the Royal Gorge is on the other side of the river (actually not near it at all). If you want to fish then stay in Cotapaxi (I got a speeding ticket there on my 97 S1 years ago LOL) Sounds like either will work for what you want to do.... I have a lot going on in mid july but can ride out and visit and if the timing is right may camp where you are at for one night.... You are the third non-native Bueller to come through this area recently and I missed the first two and do not want to miss another one. If I had to pick one I would pick Cotapaxi since it is not near Canon City or Salida, near the river, rafting, trails and a good eatery is available in Texas Creek (about 7 miles East) 50 is a good road to ride, are you bring a bike? Keep me updated on your arrival... Frank f_skinner at yahoo dot com |

My hubby and I will be staying at a KOA in Gunnison in mid-July . Haven't stayed in the Salida/Canon City area tho. Check them out on the internet and see what folks have said about them. Usually the KOA's are fairly nice as they have to meet certain criteria. Good Luck and fun in our beautiful state |

I second the motion to stay at the Cotopaxi KOA. It is situated in an area that is visually isolated from any other development at all. If you want the look of the wild west it is the place to go. Their site layouts are above par, too. |
