its not on the cheap but this is the sport touring bike I am saving up for
(unless my savings goes to a street legal buell 1190 instead : D)

ZX-14 just add bags
I want the soft cotech bags for it
200 bucks or so
the tank bag I already have (maybe a magnet bag instead just to make everything a little more simple) and my old low lightning pegs all free and they all fit

self control not included

I have been signed up on the Motus website for what seems forever now waiting to see a picture of their Sport Tourer.

I would like to also reccomend the Yamaha FJR. IT is a excellent platform to do some long distance day or short hops. I have found to be a excellent all around bike. 6.6 gallon tank and gets me anywhere from 200-250 miles per tank depending on how hard you twist.

The ZX14 is a fantastic bike, I ride one of my buddies all the time. Just like Delta says, buy one and put bags on it. I see them around for less than 9000 all the time. The Bandit 1250 is also a great bike, lots of torque like the ZX14 but not as comfortable. I personally would grab a used ST1300 and ride the hell out of it, that bike was meant to be ridden alot!

I was looking at the ST, and happen to see one at HC. Used can be found at a great value. I would also like to find a motard, or better yet make one for cheap fun on the way to work.

I was unhappy with the handling characteristics, and the excessive heat on my 2008 XB12XT.
I found My 2005 ST1300 on CL for $5500, I couldn't pass it up!
I just turned over 50,000 miles on the ST and it is humming like a top.
No heat issues like the Uly, and is like a pack mule when it's time to travel.
The bike is alot of fun in the curves, and a great commuter.
I sold the Uly, bought an 1125CR, and paid off the Honda.
I've never looked back, don't miss the Uly at all, and am constantly finding new reasons to ride the Honda.

Wbrisett-
That was my ST1300 at Homecoming. I wanted to buy an FJR but I figured the ST was more agreeable for the wife since she absolutely hated my S3 (not such a bad thing though).
I have ridden several 800+mi. days and a couple over 900. It is amazing how easy it is on that smooth bike. My only complaint is for a $14,000 touring bike it has one of the worst seats I've ever sat on.

It handles very well for a 740# (wet) bike and I routinely get 48-50mpg. I would like to try a Uly for a long trip but haven't gotten the chance.

me too but I would go 100cc bigger if it were available in the states

I have also ridden a friends ZX-14 and it has great street manners broad power band that you can take it easy with a fat low end or wind it up to ludicrous speed.
handles very well for how heavy it is but it really shines in its ability to soak up the highway.
still couldn't use it for the daily grind but I wouldn't mind parking one next to the lightning

my local BMW shop said they were available in Canada and that a few guys have gotten them there and brought them back, not sure what all is needed to tile them here but it may be worth a look if you are in the market.

I think one went by me on the highway about a month ago, very sharp bike.

My XT is my sport touring bike. In all honesty, right now it is not as comfortable touring as my FXDX, but it is a lot more sporty. When I bought the XT, if I had not bought a Buell I probably would have bought an FJR. I was also considering most of the bikes mentioned in this thread, but I was leaning toward the FJR.

At Homecoming I saw a S3T that I fell in love with. Part of it was certainly how well it had been taken care of, but it was a really sharp bike. If I didn't have my XT, I would definitely be looking for a nice S3T now. Unfortunately, most of them aren't as nice as the one I fell in love with at Homecoming.

Anyway, happy shopping.

I like the fact my bike (maybe not for long) is actually named ST. It is definitely light for it's class (500 lbs with 5 gallons of fuel and saddlebags attached), and not lacking in SEAMLESS power. It's so quiet when you roll on in 6th gear its almost like magic. It will indicate 140 with room to push (so I've been told, hehe)

The Ulysses gets my vote. In the last 8 days I did a 1050 mile day, followed by a 700 mile day, followed by 4 days of touring several hundred miles per day around Colorado, then a 900 mile day and ending with an 850 mile day yesterday. And I don't feel beat up at all. In fact I went on a "burger" ride with some friends this afternoon!

blackbird hayabusa and zx-14 BARELY squeak by the 500lb limit to be a REAL sport touring mount

IMO the weight helps soak up the highway a little better and is a requirement in a sport touring mount for me

a newer VFR interceptor has the ergos decent power room for bags and a great engine but just doesn't have the mass.
the bumps joints and seams tend to jostle the entire bike and cant be tuned out without a significant amount of nose dive as a trade off.
granted a long wheelbase helps too and that also adds weight.

trade some sport for some touring

but that's just my opinion

Wish I had run into you. One of our local Buell riders thought of going to Homecoming, and asked if I was taking the Uly. He has the 1125R and he didn't want to travel 1400 miles each way on it. I told him that I had planned on taking it, but if he was going, I would loan him the Uly and take my BMW RT. If he had come, I wouldn't have felt out of place next to your ST. ; )

Actually, my wife did take her BMW R1150R up to homecoming. But then unlike me, she only has the one bike.

I can't speak for all of them, but I'd call the ST1300 an overweight fat pig. I can't believe how heavy that bike is - it feels like you're riding a school bus.

I don't see how more weight has anything to do with a good SPORT touring bike. If steadiness on the HIGHWAY is a requirement for your SPORT touring bike, then you don't need a SPORT touring bike. Sport touring is not about the highway.

A Goldwing (as well as an Electra Glide) feels lighter and handles better than the ST1300 in my experience, and have no desire to purchase any of them.

My S3T just took me coast to coast and did an admirable job.

Most of the bikes mentioned so far (imnsho) are touring bikes, if you want a true SPORT Tour bike, look at a used Ducati ST, ST2's are the two valve aircooled models, ST4 (water cooled 4 valves) is the 916, ST4s is the 996 motor, about 450lbs with the hard bags. The ST3 is also a very nice bike (H2O 3 valves)

A Ducati guru (LT Snyder) is selling off his collection, very good prices for what you get. The ST4s is very desirable....

how do you get the touring part of sport touring in?

I cant 2 lane to the dragon then Colorado then to California to ride the nice roads. the highway is a necessary evil and a sport touring bike is meant to balance that evil with the good.
ie a balance between
touring (long haul highway)
and
sport (twisty and fast)

by your implications a cbr1000rr and r1 are sport touring bikes maybe even a gixxer 600 and 750?
what are your qualifications to a sport touring bike?

Motorcycle online made a fine distinction back in 1998 while testing the S3T and the Duc ST2.

The ST2 and the S3T are not so much sport-tourers, as touring sports. What's the difference, you say? Well, in "sport-tourers", "sport" modifies "tourer." Thus, a "sport-tourer" is essentially an aggressive touring bike, like the BMW R1100RS. However, flip-flop the words, where "touring" modifies "sport", you have a completely different concept -- a sportbike with touring features. It seems as though we are splitting semantic hairs, but we feel the difference looms large. This is how we see the Ducati ST2 and the Buell S3T Thunderbolt -- sportbikes set up for touring duty.

An R1 can be a sport-touring bike. I've done some mega-miles on both my Firebolt (stock ergos) and my CR (low bars).

A sport touring bike should be a light, nimble chassis that's capable of riding in a sporty manner, coupled with the capability to carry some luggage and a riding position that is comfortable for all day.

My CR is no fun on the highway, but it can do it when it needs to.

If I had borrowed my friend's ST1300 for my cross-country trip instead of riding my S3T, I would have been PISSED when I got to certain bits of roads all across the country.

This, of course, is just my opinion on the matter.

Steve, I've read that article and it's been on my mind this whole thread...

But to me, what makes an "aggressive" tourer? To me, many of the bikes branded as Sport Tourers are as heavy as a touring bike, handle just as poorly, have just as little lean angle - but - they hold less stuff. Does less cargo carrying capacity define a Sport Tourer over a Touring bike?

uh oh

with Steve in the discussion I may have to step out because trying to define the ulybolt could make my head explode

adventure touring sport?

sport bike set up for touring with a some adventure bike thrown in there too?

or is it touring adventure sport?
LOL

(in all honesty I love that bike)

I do like that distinction between sport touring an touring sport though
and what some have come to refer to as hyper-sport touring (a hyper-sport bike set up for touring)

Two of my friends ride 1400 Concours...they are remarkably nimble for the size... one of he guys broke a footpeg from hitting a Botts Dot while cornering...that is pretty heeled over for a big ole honkin touring bike...

To me, many of the bikes branded as Sport Tourers are as heavy as a touring bike

There is no denying that many of the Sport Touring bikes (ST1300, FJR, RT, Concours, etc) are heavy. But that said, some of them loose that weight (or appear to) during riding. The ST1300, which takes the weight crown of the bikes I listed, feels heavy and stiff at low speeds. However, get it up to a decent speed and it's pretty nimble for a 600 lbs bike. You'll never mistake it for an 1125R or CR, but it's not bad.

Some of the sport touring bikes, like BMWs K1300GT is actually a screamer on the road both as a touring machine and in the corners. The major downside to it is how physically large it is, and its cost. BMW is quite proud of that bike.
