Wow what a fool! I never lube\clean a chain when it is running. 1. It makes a mess flipping crap around 2. It is dangerous |

But we can all do with a safety reminder. I have a cousin that did that many years ago. |

I have an old friend that lost a whole hand in a chain-n-sprocket incident...he wasn't doing anything stupid like wiping down the chain while the bike was running. He was out dirt biking in about 1970 or so...he was riding a TM400 (old Suzuki motocross bike)...throttle stuck and he crashed...in the process, his hand went between the chain and the lower part of the rear sprocket...snip....took it off just above the wrist... |

Yeah, a safety reminder is never a bad thing. You have to be careful around moving equipment and not do stupid things like that or you can end up hurt badly in no time flat. My father in law lost the tips of two fingers to a chain/sprocket on a ditch witch a few years ago. |

The warning doesn't do much good as the image loads on screen immediately below it. I've added a warning to the originating post here. |

Now do you understand why Harley started using belts. If you corner Erik you will probabley find a spec on belt breaking before they amputate. Explains the Broken Uly belts! You can not engineer around or fix Stupid! |

I almost had that happen when I was lubing my belt. NOT! Actually, I was at the local import bike dealer one day and saw a little kid checking out the rear of a dirt bike that was on a stand and said to myself "I hope that kid doesn’t stick his fingers in the chain" Next thing I know the kid is screaming and low and behold the poor kid had turned the back wheel while his fingers were on the sprocket. I think he was OK, I didn’t stick around long enough to find out. |

Thankfully, I surmised that the link in the original post would include graphic mutilation (prior to Blake's edit) and avoided clicking on it. I knew a kid (a girl) when I was growing up that lost 2 fingers playing around with a chain drive 3-wheeled cycle she had. I later worked with a grown man that had lost two finger tips to a belt drive on a gas-powered coal screw conveyor. Power transmission systems are nothing to fool around with. |

I've heard way to many farmer stories about things getting caught in the tractor's PTO. Gives me the willies! |

I spent 6 hours in the ER with my dad because of a broken garage door cable last night... The garage door got stuck because it was binding in the tracks and when he attempted to free the cable since it wasn't retracting, it retracted on it's own taking off part of his thumb, slicing his ring finger lengthwise and leaving a peice of cable lodged in his pinky. |

And to think the guy who cut his fingers off was on his way to being a cop. |

In my 8th grade woodshop class, we had a student aide named Chan. He was demonstrating bandsaw safety to us students. Long story short, the bandsaw is now referred to as the Chansaw. Right up the middle of his index finger, all the way to his hand. Clean straight line cut. Oh... and a big red stripe on the wall. |
