Got off the highway and my Blast stalled. It will start but I have to hold the throttle or it stalls. Noticed a slight head leak, took it to Lake Erie HD - they noticed one of the motormount bolts is sheared off too. I was gonna try to rent a truck and strap it in the bed but no one's got any. If I could keep it runnin I'll limp it but that head bolt concerns me. Anyone got any ideas? |

You're riding a Blast to homecoming? Well I feel your pain about the bike not running, my own Buell has stranded me three times to date. But my first question is what the hell are you doing riding a Blast to homecoming? I applaud your nerve/gumption/initiative in making the attempt. In any rate please fill the board in on your progress as you make your way there. I'm sure someone on the board will help you out or at least pick you up and get you there. Good on you for effort!!! |

FYI - Not sure I can help you, but wanted to let youknow I contacted BadS1 (Dana) and let him know about your situation. He said they already had a few riders register from Ohio and didn't know of anyone offhand that was in that area. Not knowing the Blast real well, but having fixed a sheared bolt on my M2, I drilled mine out with a titanium bit, then used an easyout to remove the bolt. Replaced it and was back on the road in about 30 minutes. Good Luck! |

I like what Koz just said. Can the guys at Lake Erie HD not help you out with the motor mount bolt? Can't they drill it out or take an easy out to it as KoZ suggested? Have you tested the battery, maybe a good charge might help you out with the stalling at idle. Perhaps the battery is losing charge with a bad ground? |

They're looking at it now as far as the basics go - they seem to think the motormount bolt will a nightmare to get out as they have had problems getting them out. I was just going to cross my fingers and limp it to homecoming but if they can at least fix the idling problem that would be nice. |

The stalling at idle may well be a torn carb coupler AKA das boot...10 dollar part that can be changed in 10 minutes with a few hand tools...if you can't get one, the boot can be wrapped with duct tape and reclamped as an emergency measure...the sheared motor mount bolt is a bigger problem...if it's the front mount where it attaches to the head, it needs to be fixed before it is ridden at all, otherwise the motor will rotate down if the other bolt or the mount breaks. And it is no big deal to ride a Blast on a trip...a "500" is plenty of bike to travel with...my old Blast would cruise all day at 70mph and get 78mpg doing it.. |

I have the super carb boot - it's not the boot leaking. And yes, it's the front motormount, the bolt sheared is the one towards the right facing it. |

I'm at homecoming right now and there are several riders here on Blasts. One of the most reliable motorcycles ever made. |

I'm not driving the bike, it needs a head gasket and that bolt fixed. Worst case scenario just happened. My question to badweb is do I bother to truck the bike to homecoming and try to get it fixed up there? Or should I just rent a truck and go back home? (Message edited by sphere79 on June 17, 2010) |

If you decide to come up here (I used to live in Milwaukee) I am pretty sure you could get the parts you need at Hal's or Uke's. I gotta believe there are enough guys/wrenches that they would love the challenge of tearing the bike down tomorrow and putting it back together. The forcast is isolated thunderstorms tomorrow so it might be more fun wrenching then riding. The key will be getting into town early so you got time to get all this done. I live 100 miles north of Milwaukee now otherwise I would offer my place up to you. If you do not have a way to call anyone at the homecoming, call me and I sill do what I can to help you get connected with them. 920-427-2914 (if I don't answer right away I am putting my daughter down so leave a message) |

I ended up staying the night in Ohio as the rental places were all closing and the few I called didn't have what I needed. The plan is to find a suitable truck or van in the morning (would a Caravan with removable seats work?) and take it to WI. I won't get there till registration has ended so hopefully they'll still have me and I can at least check the concert out and maybe wrench Sat or Sun (was gonna leave in the AM but I could stay another night if need be). Hopefully I can find a vehicle and make this happen. Thanks for the ideas and help offers. |

Small Uhaul truck with a ramp would be perfect. Good luck to you |

Yea not at $20 a day and .79 cents a mile though. From what I've read a Caravan will actually work if I pull the seats so that's an option too. I made a res on enterprise.com because they say they have a truck but we'll see what they say in the AM..... |

The Caravan is the bomb as far as fuel economy, and will hold the bike no problem. |

Yeah, just pop off the mirrors and it will probably just roll in there with no issue. Wouldn't hurt to measure stuff before money is transferred though! |

Really? Wow. I'm surprised the bike would go into the caravan without some major headaches. And where are you going to store the seats? And you will need solid tie down points... if the seat anchors are steel loops they would work, but who knows whats available with the new folding seats. |

Rent a truck and take the bike up there. and have Hals put on XB9 piston, cylinder, and head. They will have to fab up a mount for the rear tie bar on the head, but you will have more power, and better fuel economy. You might even be able to find a used set up there. If i wasn't going to a wedding on Saturday, I would have rode my blast to HC as well. |

I live 10 minutes away from where you're broken down. I sent you a PM with my cell if you need any help. There's a great machine shop I use that's really reasonable locally too. Motorheads on 301. (Message edited by Thumper74 on June 18, 2010) |

Several blasts @ homecoming? You must be at a different homecoming cause I have only seen one and that's mine and it killed over after about 80 miles. It's at Hal's now. |

I fit a 2004 XB12S in the back of a 2002 Chevy Astro. My van has tie down points and both bench seats come out fairly easy. Couldn't fit the Uly in without rotating bars down and taking off windshield. No place for a motorcycle though! Not unless it's a broke motorcycle! |

At HC now, first chance I've had to post. My only option (without waiting days) was a Budget Truck - got here just in time to grab some food and check out the band. At the moment I have no clue what I will do to get the bike running or home. I burned through most of the emergency cash on that truck rental, so I figured I'd grab the gaskets from Hal's and try to find someone with space and a few of the tools I don't have with me (not to mention an extractor for that broken bolt) and try and get it done myself. I'll know better what my options are tomorrow - glad I'm at least at Homecoming, even if I missed yesterday and most of today. |

Sphere, if you don't find anything closer to Alpine, I'm about 40 min. south of you in McHenry and 2 miles from McHenry HD. I have garage space, tools, etc. I wont be home from work today until about 6, but my wife can let you in if you want to get it done. i can give you a hand with it tonight or tomorrow morning. |

Sorry for no update, I rolled in late last night. Loose1 (the guy with the FI Blast with XB wheels and swingarm) had parts and tools and we (OK he did most of it) changed the head gasket and extracted the bolt last night. The damn thing still doesn't run right. It did start once, but you had to hold the throttle open like before the repairs. We changed the plug and still nothing. I'm gonna look at the carb this morning (some have suggested I give "Brian in Milwaukee" a call) but at this point I'm ready to look for another rental vehicle home. Loose and others went above and beyond and I cannot thank them enough. I may fiddle with it in the Alpine lot this morning but I'm pretty much giving up............ |
