Stayed at deal's gap last year and rode almost every good road between there and the Snake. One day up in Tennessee and one day down through North Carolina... Anyway, with deals gap closed at the north end I'm thinking it might not be a good choice this year so looking for an alternate base camp. Anybody ever camped up near Douglas lake area? Was looking at a camp called "tent camping usa" in Del Rio TN as a possibility. Any natives to that area that could suggest something better? Thanks in advance. |

I am about 30 minutes from the Shady Valley (US 421) area...there is a good campground about 15 minutes north of Shady Valley off of HWY 91 near Backbone Rock. |

We always base out of Bryson City, NC at Deep Creek Campground. Bryson City is a nice little town with all the amenities, and it's only a few miles from 28- a "must-do" road. Check them out at www.deepcreekcamping.com . |

i just got back from that area. 4 days of glorious riding. we stayed in gatlinburg. about 100 miles either way you go to get to the dragon. we did cherohala skyway route one day and across the mountain to cherokee, to bryson city, pick up hwy 28 to us129 the next day. either ride is nothing less than excellent. we weren't camping, although there are several campgrounds in that area. one caught my eye in townsend, tn., about 10-15 miles from gatlinburg. i'm looking forward to a camping trip over, hopefully soon. enjoy your trip. the dragon is a little paradise right now with it being closed on one end. alot of people are staying away. traffic is very little, NO trucks, limited law enforcement.(2 TN state troppers. no more, no less) i've been twice in the last month, and wish i could go again before it gets too hot, and the rock slide gets fixed. matt |
