I should have just dropped the dough and bought the hard bags and rack that I wanted... but now it is too late... also thought long and hard about taking a trailer to Mukwanago... but there is no adventure in that... the campground is only about 65 miles from my place... so if shit falls apart on the way I will just ring up a friend to come and help me out...
Just to make you all feel better about not riding in, there is a currently 65% chance (and growing) that I'll be trailering the CR and I'm only 5 hours away.
Wifey likes riding but does NOT like being away for 4 days with only a backpack...
We should have a farthest ride / shortest trailer'd contest.
I think Bud might beat all of you on shortest trailer... ummmnn that did NOT come out right... It would be cool to weigh the loaded bikes and see who can fit the most crap onto one tho...
Char, I have an extra camp stove I can toss into the POP-UP before I head out on Thursday that you are welcome to borrow. Just let me know. What classification would I be in if I am riding down AND having the wife bring the camper?
I have not started, I am leaving Wed in the AM and will stop somewhere in IA for the night (tent camping or sleeping in the truck). It is just shy of 1200 miles and I will have the white 1125R in the truck and I will not be bringing it back. It will be going to its new owner. THEN, I am picking up a slide-in camper for the truck.
Lynn is flying in Friday, we will do the dinner the leave Saturday in the AM... It will be a short one for me.
hey frank, if you think your coming near ames ia, id leave you a key to the house. we will be taking off tomorrow night, but youd be more then welcome. youd have a place to shower and get out of the truck for a bit.
my house is literally about a mile or so off I-35 so you may be? i usually take I-35 north to hwy 20 then that all the way east into wisconsin.
Tim, knowing the way I do things I may go all the way to WI.... Lynn hates when I do that but she will not be in the truck LOL. If I get tired I will tent camp somewhere...
If we've acquired anything over 22 years of Homecomings . . it's a bit of wisdom.
If you are tired. Stop.
If Lynn is flying in and arrives before you do . . .you have my number. . . . call and I'll make certain she's collected and billeted pending your arrival.
This is what being raised by a Marine does to you:
- 3 am wake up calls. - Car loaded and off at 4 am. - only stopping for gas or upon arrival. - No talking, no fidgeting, no pestering Dad or Mom. - Address Dad as SgtMaj when checking in.
(I thought that was normal, Lynn has another word for it)
Will do Court. Lynn will be picked up regardless of my arrival. Thanks for the offer... See you in a few days.
+1 on picking up Lynn...but it's looking like I'll have to pick her up on a Uly. Still figuring out details, but it looks like Kim and I are riding (YAY!) out and back. Gonna meet up with Ken somewhere Weds AM, head to Toledo, meet up with Etennuly (Vern) and some others and overnight in Toledo, then head to Big Mac for the northern run to WI on Thursday.
Joe, Lynn's parents are going to pick her up and we will spend some time with them Friday. I will get there Thursday sometime so I will need you to call me with the room info when you have it.
I sent you my cell number if you would like to call and meet in Cumberland Tuesday afternoon. If you are heading out earlier no problem and I will see you at Homecoming.
Guys . . . as a veteran of many of these . . . a couple suggestahints.
First: Ride safely and use your head. The communal enthusiasm of these can dull the senses and sometimes has folks doing things they would no otherwise do. If you're tired stop, if you need help ask for it. If you are going to drink at Alpine Valley . . arrange for a ride back to where'ver you are sating . . .lord knows we have the resources to get anyone about anyplace and I've run a taxi/shuttle for the last several years.
Second: While at ERIK BUELL RACING on Friday be mindful that we no longer command the entire parking lot. In the past, with Buell having all the buildings, we could "play" a bit without offending the locals. We need to, to the extent we can, maintain a bit of a lid on that. What may seem like "something we've always done" could incur unforeseen consequences this year.
We've always had, and still do, great relations with the Village of East Troy and want to stay on their good side as well as the neighbors. Mostly . . just be cool . . we're going to have a ball!
And finally . . . as you go into East Troy and spend money for gas, food or whatever be sure to wear your BUELL shirts. If you get a chance . . stop by the local PD/Village Hall on the Town Square and say "thanks".
Made it to Traverse City today. We are in no hurry so kinda taking our time. Plan on at least 300 miles a day. I think we will spend a little bit of time in Mackinac tomorrow then push over to Escanaba(?) and stay at the Casino there. Then on to East Troy wed morn!
