I used to have a 93 YJ, but old man winter claimed that vehicle, and put me in a ditch and tweaked the frame, so long story short my parents said if i get rid of the jeep instead of fixing it i could get a bike (thats were my firebolt came into my life!) i then ended up with my current car (5 speed Honda accord) the cars got a lot of miles, but runs like a top, and has given me no problems at all. I told my younger sister that when it comes time for her to get her license that I'd sell her my Honda for $800, and get myself a different vehicle i actually like. well she wont get her license for another 9 months or so, but I'm itching to get a new vehicle (specifically another jeep!!!) i've always wanted a CJ (5 or 7) yet i know they are very rudimentary vehicles and not the best DD unless you put lots of money into them (even then they aren't the best for daily driving) I was just seeing who here has owned or does own a CJ? i know jeeps are more or less money pits, but i had more fun wasting money on my old YJ than i've had saving money driving my accord. so put aside that its a jeep, and you'll always be fixing or adding something to it. what other experience or advice do you guys have? when looking for my first jeep i looked at soooooo many different jeeps CJ's YJ's TJ's, that i can tell if its got a good body & frame, i know were to look for rust, and other notorious jeep problems what i'm thinking about doing is just telling my sister that i may just keep my car, and let her use it when she needs it (if she pays for my insurance or gas or something)and find a fairly nice CJ and make it more of a second vehicle/toy/project..... i dont want the jeep to go off-roading or mudding, i would use it on the road mostly, and make it as nice as i could over time. so what do you guys think? |

Sell yer sister, and get the jeep! I had a 93 YJ also, and I WILL own one again. When I was bricklaying on commercial projects 12 years ago, the jeep used to chase the lull around the jobsite. The old fella driving the lull couldn't believe the little jeep was so off-road capable. New one will have coil springs though. Maybe one of those 4 door units that just came out. Either way, make sure it's fuel injected, and you will be fine. A friend of mine picked up a 98 with 100k on it. One small dent in the hood from someone letting it flip open and hit the windshield. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, and he got it for $1000. I'm jealous! I just got rid of my 06 Mitsu Eclipse. Time for something new. One of them 4 door would make a great family truckster! |

CJ's are prone to rollovers. If you're going to get another Jeep, I would suggest another YJ. |

ive got a 97 tj, done alot of work to it, lots of offroading, its had a rough life. As far a reliability Ive never had anything break that I didnt do on the trail. I have all the confidence in the world that an unmodified tj would make a dependable daily driver. And if something does happen they are not to bad to work on. |

I have a '74 CJ7 and have had a couple of CJ5's over the years. CJ5's are no good if you weigh more than 200 lbs, unless you wear a nylon shirt so that the steering wheel can slide over your belly. 7's have so much more room. As for DD duty they suck. Interstate travel at all really sucks. Sport about town OK, but why the heck have one with no interest in off roading at least a little. True they look cool, but really, if you are not going to get it dirty get a coil spring model. |

I've owned several CJ's and XJ's. Currently I have an '85 CJ7 I swapped a 360 into. Love it to death! It makes a fine daily driver with a little bit of investment. Not the best on fuel mileage but I don't but ANY vehicle for fuel efficiency. I love Jeeps.....good luck! |

this is after i crashed the blue one, i bought two more parts jeeps that i was planning on rebuilding all three into 1 or 2 working jeeps, yet my dad decided that it would be best (easier) if i just sold all three, and then buy a normal car, and i was then allowed to get a bike as well |

CJ's are prone to rollovers. If you're going to get another Jeep, I would suggest another YJ. if i got a CJ i'd probably eventually try and get some sway bars for it that go from the rear roll bars to the windshield (like they did with the YJ's and such) I know a 7's not to far off the dimensions of a YJ, but i do think the 5 is smaller than any of them (correct me if I'm wrong). i'd say jeeps in general are prone to roll over since they have such a small wheel base and sit fairly high (especially if they are jacked up) I have all the confidence in the world that an unmodified tj would make a dependable daily driver. And if something does happen they are not to bad to work on. yea a TJ would make a good DD i see soccer moms driving them around town! they are good vehicles and i would love to own one, but jeeps usually tent to hold their value, and a jeep from 97 up is still out of my price range at the moment, and besides i love the looks of the CJ's better than the TJ's....although FI would be nice to have!...and coils..... CJ5's are no good if you weigh more than 200 lbs, unless you wear a nylon shirt so that the steering wheel can slide over your belly. 7's have so much more room. haha i have driven a 5 before, they are sure a tight fit, but i'm not big, i'm like 140 and 18, so i can deal with having the steering wheel so low (i could always get a smaller steering wheel to to help with that problem) althought if it came down to just picking between a 5 and 7, i'd still go for the 7! As for DD duty they suck. Interstate travel at all really sucks. Sport about town OK, but why the heck have one with no interest in off roading at least a little. True they look cool, but really, if you are not going to get it dirty get a coil spring model. good news is i dont do much "interstate" driving! i just stick to country roads and roads in town as far as driving goes. and the whole offroading bit....well i wouldnt go places that some go such as mud swamps and such, i'm game for playing around off the pavement, but nothing to serious I've owned several CJ's and XJ's. Currently I have an '85 CJ7 I swapped a 360 into. Love it to death! It makes a fine daily driver with a little bit of investment. Not the best on fuel mileage but I don't but ANY vehicle for fuel efficiency. I love Jeeps.....good luck! it seems a lot of people put big v8's into them. i honestly would be fine with a straigh 6, or v6 in one, i dont need a huge power house!, like i said most of my driving would stick to the roads. yes MPH is bad with jeeps i think i only got like 17-19 out of my YJ when i had it |

I have had a number of jeeps in the past, I think a good CJ-7 would work good for you, you could also pick up an early YJ fairly cheep also. Just remember what Jeep stands for, Just Empty Every Pocket. |

I've owed both. I had an 81 CJ7 and currently own a 90 Sahara. I would love another CJ but I have to say that I found some new love for my YJ. I just installed a Borla header to tailpipe exhaust, Offenhauser duel plane intake, Edelbrock 500cfm carb & did the Nutter Bypass. WOW what a difference!!! Back to the subject, both are great vehicles. The CJ is a little more rough around the edges and crude than a YJ. Think of it this way, CJ=Tuber, YJ=XB & and anything newer = 1125R. |

Jim, I went the other way for power in two cases. A stock 406 sb Chevy, with a two barrel Rochester for massive torque and easy fixes. Major thumper on four wheels. |

I'm going to throw a cam and lifters in it this winter to beef the motor up a little. I have a really nice bored 30 over 302 in the shed that I have for a future project car, I just haven't found the car yet. lol My buddies keep telling me to just throw it in the Jeep and get it over with. My Dad has a 63 Ford van that he used to drive and said I can have it if I wanted it. My wife hinted she'd like to see that done over. I was thinking I could easily throw the 302 in that as well but it would need a lot more upgrades besides the engine. It's a straight 6 with 3 on the tree, no power steering and non power drum brakes all around. Talk about fun to drive. |

I had a Ford truck with 3 on the tree. All you would need to do on that van is put the motor in. The 300 i6 took the same trans shaft as the 302. All u would need is a set of motor mounts. I think SSB sells a set of front disc conversions for that van. If it has a twin I-bean front, all you need is some later spindles, and a master cylinder, and vacuum booster for it. Power steering? I don't have an answer for that one. That van sounds fun! |

damnut your jeep/buell comparison is now my facebook status haha! i like that! as far as engine work my YJ never gave me any problem while i had it. if i would still have it i would have probably redone the head, it had a slight tick to it before i crashed it, but o well. Odds are whatever CJ i end up with (w/e i get one) will be carb. which isnt my first choice, but they have some good aftermarket ones out there! |
