CHP officer Tom Coleman was killed in the line of duty today. He is known here on BadWeB as Hwyranger. Early this morning, Tom had pulled over an apparent drunk driver on I-10 by Redlands, CA. While he was processing the incident, a semitruck hit him and his BMW Patrol bike. He was killed instantly. Tom was 34 years old and leaves behind a wife and two very young kids. A two year old boy and a 6 month old girl. I met Tom a couple of times. He and I were the first two customers at Glendale Harley Davidson to 1125Rs. He was just as excited and giddy as I was to get the shiny new Buell. I did not know Tom well. I knew him well enough to know that he loved to ride. He was very excited when he graduated from a Patrol car to a bike two years ago. Finally, I want to thank Tom for his service to the community. His contribution to making our highways in Southern California safer is appreciated. I hope you will join me in prayers for those that survive him, his parents, wife and two young kids. My passenger pegs are down in honor of Tom tomorrow. (Message edited by doerman on June 12, 2010) |

My prayers and condolences go out to the family and friends of Tom Coleman... I'm a little confused about the story of how it happened though... the LA Times is reporting it this way: A California Highway Patrol officer was killed Friday during a high-speed pursuit in Redlands when his motorcycle slammed into a big-rig truck. The accident occurred during a wild chase on surface streets near the 10 Freeway that reached speeds of 100 mph. Tom Coleman, a seven-year CHP veteran, died instantly in the morning collision, which occurred two days after another highway patrol motorcycle officer was seriously hurt during a traffic stop on the 405 Freeway on L.A.'s Westside. That officer remains in critical condition Friday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

I know, Matt. I learned it on Channel 2 news and checked the LA times report afterwards. The two are contradicting. |

It's a real shame to lose someone like this, whichever way it happened. We had to route a lot of trucks around that today because they had the freeway shut down for so long. My coworkers and I were commenting on the fact that motor officers don't really wear any gear. Very few wear a full face helmet, and unless it's raining out most seem to ride around in short sleeve shirts and uniform pants. No armor at all. I'm thinking a little more protective gear should be mandated by their employer... the taxpayers. It would stimulate motorcycle related economy by creating large orders for companies like Alpinestars and our motor patrol officers would stand a better chance of survival. |

Man...its a small world sometimes. This made National News. This morning I was reading the Tulsa World newspaper and it had a small article on this. Later, I log onto the Badweb to find out it was Hwyranger!? I remember many of his posts. He was always helpful when it came to answering questions about the law at traffic citations. Rest in Peace. |
