I routinely use Remote Desktop to access my office pc to do work from locations outside. How would you 'take over' or remote into another person's personal pc that is having trouble? My brother & I bought our mother a laptop (W7)and between not being able to see well and mostly computer illiterate she has a lot of trouble with it. I would like to be able to take over her machine remotely and tutor her instead of trying to explain it over the phone. I'd have BluzM2 stop by to help but he'd probably never speak to me again. |

There is software available out there to do that, like GoToMyPC. I think there is also a way to use Windows Live Messenger to send remote assistance requests, but I have never done that so I can't give you any details. |

Teamviewer is what I use. I got the full installed version on my computer, but they have a Quick Support version that you can run and will allow access using the provided password. It works without dealing with configuring routers and all that fun stuff. http://www.teamviewer.com |

Mike, I have the same problem with my Mom. 80 yo and still keeping up! However, it can really be a pain sometimes. Frank, thanks for the info, I'd not seen that one before. I'm going to give it a try. Brad |

VNC, several free versions. Also you can get a hardware device to use with VNC clients, plug it into the video, mouse/keyboard which then gives you access to BIOS level. I have a KVM switch with VNC on my servers at work so I can do stuff to them from my desk. I think Tight VNC is the free software I have deployed on most of the workstations, but for $100 a hardware solution is best because when you disconnect the computer from it, it is once again secure. All of the software methods will leave certain parts open, so there is a risk. You can also RDP into any Windows machine if it is turned on and you know the IP address and have the ports forwarded from the router. |

I use Logmein.com (log me in) It's free for the basic version, with upgrades available. Only bummer is you have to be at each computer to set up each "terminal". They have an iPhone version as well. If I'm running late to church, I can start the projectors, open the song files and walk in at the last minute, just like I'd been there for 10 minutes.... The iPhone app is $30, but computer to computer is free. LMI also has chat available when you are signed in to the remote computer. (Message edited by Toona on June 12, 2010) |

+1, Log Me In Computers stolen were recovered using installed Log Me In software. Management's IT-guy used software to identify thieves, who were using the computers. |

I'm sort of surprised nobody else has pointed this out... Use Windows Messenger. It's free and it's built right into windows. It lets you share control of the desktop with a remote user. |

That's what I wanted was to be able to run her pc while she watched. We use RDP at work a lot but I didn't think I could use that in the public network. I'll see if I can make the Win Messenger work. Thanks for the help guys. p.s. a couple of weeks ago I was at one of our remote substations working on some testy equipment when the network settings got hosed. The engineer from 200mi. away thought that he was going to have to drive up and fix it. I talked to one of our network engineers and between the 2 of them they were both RDP'd into my laptop connected to the equipment. A couple hours later I was on my way and the testy equipment was back in business. |

At school we use CrossLoop. Works great for just one on one. http://www.crossloop.com/download.htm?affid=xl&src =global_download_footer |
