"Give me the sound of a rolling dice, give me a whiskey don't think twice, deal me the card that takes my blues away, Have fun in the USA." Hehehe! Trying to make me homesick for Australian music!? It's not working!
Jstfrfun - A big thank you to you for coming all that way to just have lunch with us and show us around, it was very cool It feels great to finally put faces to names, shoot the breeze and have a great laugh Don't forget to email pics of your project!
Well, we're in New York now, and it feels amazing that it's only a week since we flew out of Brisbane, we've seen and done so much. I think we were both expecting the USA to be sooooo different to home, but we're finding there's more similarities than differences.
We have however, dispelled a few traveling myths and been surprised by a few things. Some observations about the USA so far...
Not all cheese is orange.
Driving on the right side of the road is easier to get the hang of than walking on the right side of the footpath.
If you guys don't fry it, you'll dip it in chocolate and cover it in nuts... or both!
I never thought chicken in a chocolate (mole) sauce would taste soooo good
Your light switches are all upside down
Speed limits are higher, and generally everyone drives about 10-15% higher than we would in the same situation. In LA the standard of driving is quite a bit better than home, though the use of indicators seems to be optional
The perspective of the ratio of distance/fun is different - It's opened our eyes how far you'll drive or ride to just hang out with a couple of wandering Australians for a few hours, and I think that will change our own perspective about traveling at home and abroad from now on.
Things are very literal - if it says "chicken breast sandwich", you get a *whole* chicken breast on a sandwich!
Concrete Interstates are noisy and bumpy, but your backroads are smoother, wider and better marked/sign-posted
All the stuff that is bad for you, cigarettes, alcohol, chocolate, is cheaper! So how do you live so damn long???
Overall, though, I think what stands out most is the people, literally! Everyone we've met has been outgoing, friendly, charming, very welcoming, and great story tellers too. By comparison I must seem a little shy and reserved at first, but no one seems to mind. We will head home with many good friends
Time to go and get some zzz's, we're heading into Manhattan tomorrow for some sight-seeing!!!

Hey wait! Who said chocolate is BAD for you?? Dark Chocolate happens to be VERY good for you, so feel free to indulge my friends!
And yeah... LOVE Mole Poblano when I can get it. Has to be an AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant, not one of those touristy places that sells tacos and burritos though.
"Hundreds of seemingly drunk parrots are falling out of trees and the sky in a northern Australian town, mystifying veterinary surgeons who are struggling to care for them. The brightly coloured lorikeets are showing classic signs of drunkenness by losing all coordination and passing out, and then cowering in cages as they recover from their "hangovers""
As you can see by Court's pics above, we had a full day navigating our way around Midtown NYC. Court took us for the drive-around tour for a few hours before setting us down and leaving us to our own devices..
you just see those darn tourists everywhere you go don't you??
We took a spin to the promenade and looked out across the water...
and then we ventured further in...
There are a lot more pics to come, and more fun and adventures. Some of you will be joining us tomar at the Dinosaur and we can't wait to meet you all both there and at Homecoming. Chili has a few of his own stories to tell, so I shall leave those to him to share....
Did Court take you for pizza at Grimaldi's? They claim to be the first place to serve pizza in the United States. It's beneath the bridge on the Brooklyn side.
We are having a great time. I would recommend Court as a tour guide any day. We have really gotten to see some of the places a tourist never would. We passed Grimaldi's but they were still shut. Apparently the minute they open the lines start forming, so we tried the pizza 'pie' from a few other places instead. All good.
Oh, you guys have gotta post more pictures - Bruiser and I are thoroughly enjoying them! Helps with the whole 'missing V and Chili lots and lots' syndrome!
