Just started watching the series last week on DVR, three episodes at a time to catch up. I find it interesting how we have come so far in a fairly small amount of time. I was a little disappointed during the civil war explanation that the Gettysburg address was mentioned but nothing about the actual battle Of Gettysburg. After all that took place in that field and all that was at stake you would think it was important enough to cover it.They had generalize a lot of things due to amount of material to cover I guess. I had visited there last year and was amazed at that place and want to go back. There are many interesting footnotes on our history. The way we assembled the Statue of Liberty, how "Muscle cars" were born during Prohibition etc. The mini series as a whole is very well done and is worth seeing if you can. | ||

While impressed with the series, I was shocked what they left out. (nearly any mention of WWI for example) In the end I thought some of those things that were missing were usually covered on the History Channel extensively, so I chalked it up to "Something Different". | ||

I thought that way about it but then I realized it is almost impossible to wrap up 200 years of political history in a small mini-series. We could have series dedicated to just the industrial revolution or the dawn of the information age. I think the real challenge with that show, or any show that tries to bundle the USA into nice tiny digestible tidbits of information is where does one draw the line? What's not worth covering to one person is incredibly important to another. I thought it was a good attempt but it did paint us in a positive light. There wasn't much in there that highlighted any of the 'bad' stuff we've done in our history. That said it was entertaining and I enjoyed the show. | ||

I disliked the series. Nice attempt, but why all the commentaries from "celebrities?" What does Michael Douglas know about WWII history? Nothing against Mr. Douglas, but when did he become an expert? I know, you might say "anybody can comment on America's history," so then why didn't they use "everyman" commentators? When they have my plumber and a/c repairman making thoughtful comments on their program about the Civil War, then I'll watch. It looked like the producers of the show were star-struck with all their celebrities, and expected us to be, too. | ||

I see your point, about the "everyday" Joe commenting during the series. It would have been cheaper for it to be filmed that way for sure. However didn't bother me at all and I'm sure their thinking was to try and get more people to watch. And yes anybody can be a fan of history whether your an expert on the subject or not. | ||

It's the small things....I got tired of seeing the same graphics every ten seconds...the train going through, the buffalo roaming, the log cabin thrown together, the oil derricks...etc. I DID think it was neat about the first car salesmen, since I am a car salesman, the reason for fire sprinklers, since I used to install those as well, and how the fire in that factory, shaped the fire squelching "industry" | ||

Spdrxb if you go back to gettysburg you have to go another 40 mile or so s by sw to antietam battlefield in sharpsburg md.Not so touristy left close to the way it looked back then.A very humbling place.I got goose pimples when I was there | ||

Thanks for the tip Luftkoph! I will look into the Antietam battlefield while I'm there. I kinda got the chills walking around downtown Gettysburg. They never covered up the bullet and cannon ball holes in the bricks, very obvious where a lot of the shooting was. People also find relics in the fields all the time I looked but didnt find any,metal detectors are supposed to be illegal there but I think some people cheat. |
