OK, I know this is a motorcycle board, but there seems to be all kinds of other gear talk that goes on as well, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on my newest purchase. My wife and daughter started a home based business a couple of months ago, which caused our printer usage to increase tremendously. We had a decent, very inexpensive Canon all-in-one. It actually worked fine, but the cost of ink was breaking us. I thought we would get a laser printer, but I discovered an HP all-in-one inkjet that was less expensive than a color laser, has wireless connectivity, and claims lower per page costs than a color laser, so I bought one. It is the HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless. I connected it to our wireless network without any difficulty at all, and it has already been put to good use. The print quality is good and the speed is really good for an inkjet, actually up in the laser range. The only negative is that it is a bit louder than our old inkjet and definitely louder than a laser. That is not really an issue for us, but I know it could be for some. I'll have to let you know if the costs are as low as they claim, but they will certainly be lower that what we were spending on ink for our old printer. |

How does re-inking spent cartridges work out cost wise and quality wise for those who do this sort of thing? |

I run a Pro L7680, have been for a couple of years now. Just changed out one of the printer heads. I worry more about paper cost more than ink. Could just be me or the good paper. I wish them luck with the business. |

I have had an hp all-in-one for about 5 years. It is a workhorse and still going strong. |

There are no cheap inkjet printers, the ink is ridiculous. Most home laser printers and many office sized printers are the same. Until you get up into the 4000+ page counts it is just sad. If the printed pages never change, then you are probably best off finding a decent local printer to make a run of several hundred pages, you should be able to get them for a penny each or less, no way you are getting that cost with an inkjet, no matter what the manufacturer claims. Now if you are printing invoices, a black laser printer that will allow you to run in draft mode might be a good answer and might get you down in the penny per page range. Buy a good printer and base the purchase on the cost of toner. The cheapo printers are just that, cheapo. Oki makes some really nice printers with low toner costs, so does Samsung (not as low toner costs). (Message edited by Greg_E on May 31, 2010) |

The difference in this printer and other inkjets is that the print head is not part of the ink cartridge. So, when you buy ink you are only buying ink. Also, the cartridges are much larger, rated at 2200 pages for the black cartridge. Based on the cost of the cartridges, which are just under $40, they are cheaper to operate than the laser printers I was looking at. That is what made the deal for me. |

OK, I should have looked up the printer. Some HP use "large" ink tanks, but you would be surprised at how much that ink really costs. Is that a pigment based ink or dye based? |

Just ordered this... http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-ESP-5250-All-in-One-Pr inter/dp/B002MAPRZE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electroni cs&qid=1275325167&sr=8-1 The ink combo pack of color and black is less than just the black of most printers... But as stated above the cost is in the heads... |

Sorry, I don't know if it is pigment or dye based. I used to be more concerned about that for my photography, but they are getting closer to each other. For our usage, I wasn't as concerned about that. I'm not even sure how to find out, I didn't see that in any of the information I had. |
