I've noticed this year on work rides that a lot of harley riders don't see me. I'm on the Buell with full gear and I'm sure most of them don't even know it's a Buell(doesn't matter). In town, I wave at all of them(and all bikers) with a very purposeful wave and they(harley riders) just look straight ahead or off to the other side, like something else is more interesting than another biker enjoying the road. What's up with that? Bikers see other bikers....it's just the way it is. To pretend not to see them.....then something is wrong. Are they embarrassed that I may be smarter than them with full gear? Are they pissed that they are stuck on a "I got a big dick bike" and I'm on a bike that is probably more fun? Is their "harley image" fading with recent events? Most all the non harley bikers acknowledge my presence. On my other hand, when I'm in my truck, the harley riders are all eyes, looking to see who they are impressing. A non harley bike shows up in their field of vision and they go into a "I don't see you" mode until the threat is out of sight. ........

Funny how they wave big to the Yamikawahonuki Cruisers, thinking it 'might' be an HD, but that crotch rocket (even Buell) can't be acknowledged. I used to ride a lot with a buddy who had a Honda cruiser. When he would be leading, the hand went right out-then sucked right back in, 'cause I was on a ricer. Funny as hell if we ran into the same cool guy parked somewhere. Me on my American, bud on his Rice...

Just - I dont think they are threatened by what you ride or regretful of their purchase, some people just dont wave.
Maybe its a new rider scared to take a hand off of the bars?
Maybe something else is going on and they are using that hand?
Maybe they just dont see you soon enough.
Keep waving, dont lose that, Im sure you'll get one to wave soon.

But I'll say this - you talk about people not waving cause its not a HD and you speak of it like they are elitist. Every day on here I read people bad mouthing HD, its the same thing.
Just think about it next time, dont turn into a hater, stay open minded.

I'm sure there watching for their push rod cover to vibrate off or watching that bolt no matter how much locktight they use still vibrates loose and soon as they take their eye off it the whole bike falls apart. Just remember most Harley riders have kids and soon or later that kid will own a sport bike hehe justice.

I weave to any MOTORIZED 2 wheel vehicle. A rider is a rider, and I dont care what they LIKE and choose to ride. Back in 2000 I was sporting a brand new M2. Sportbike riders would seldom wave, as I was on a Harley(in their eyes) and Harley riders seldom waved, as I was on a crotch rocket(in their eyes)
Times have changed, but not as much with 'Traditional BoutiqueAntique' riders LoL

I don't wave at ANYONE. Well, maybe the little kids.
I do wave at the cows, though.
Man, they get PISSED at ya if you don't wave.

Maybe that's some deeply repressed reason I live in L.A.

Less cows.

Al

PS this 'wave' shit has gotta end.
It's gone WAY beyond insignificance.

PPS Back in the day, we'd wave to other Harley riders with the 'raised fist salute' so popularized by the minority empowerment groups.
Triumph, BSA, Honda 750 riders would get the same wave, though reversed with an extended digit.

Actually, thinking about it - I do wave sometimes - like an idiot when I'm on a Harley.

It enhances the chaos theory.

I have to say I don't have the same problem, must be a better cut of HD riders 'round these parts. Me on my white 9R in my gray and black suit with gray gloves and full face helmet, all leaned down into a tiny little object, no way they can mistake me for anything but a sport bike.

Now that I have those whatever they are called in front of the handlebars on my City X, I kinda quit doing the two finger, lame ass wave I used to do... cause, no I don't like taking my hand off the handle bars unless I am going in a straight line...

I have started to do the nod and I rather like it... I got two middle fingers from a Harley dude tonight at a party... but I actually consider that a compliment...

I am still throwing the shocker all this summer. So if they don't wave I don't care I already said what I had to say. I may just throw a fist in the air at HC though.

I have no real rhyme or reason to my waving pattern, or lack there of... it does drive me crazy when the guys at the end of my street wave at me while I am trying to stop and look for traffic before I make my turn though. They get all bent out of shape because I don't wave back... I have to explain to them that it is more important to have my clutch pulled in so the bike doesn't stall out! Sometimes when I don't wave, I think about a line from the Buell website, something about "it's ok not to wave back"! Also, though, sometimes I wave like that guy on the moped in the above picture!

I wave when I know it is safe to wave. Doesn't matter what type of bike it is. BUT if it is a sport bike = 2 fingers slanted down
If it is a BMW or other type or touring or adventure bike = hand up in the air
Cruiser = how ever they wave at me
PMS = I'm not waving : )

+1 Ourdee. Weekend warriors around here are "too cool" to be bothered waving to non-HD riders.

As a rule, though, I ALWAYS get (and return) a wave from a sport-tourer, or a sportbike rider.

I will confess...I've stopped initiating waves. I'll always return one (unless I'm doing something important like working the controls), but I'm so over the whole thing I don't bother trying to get anyone's attention anymore.

I don't ride for *their* (whoever "they" are) approval, I ride for my own reasons. If they're nice to me...I'm nice back. But if they can't be bothered...I'm fine with that too.

Maybe 10 percent of the H-D riders wave to me...Most of them are the hard core looking bikers...The ones who do not wave I give them, What I call the exhaust wave I squeeze my clutch and full throttle letting them know my Buell has a sporty motor in it and is as much or even more an American bike as they ride.

A hundred or more bikes were just in town for some sort of ride. So I got 71 Glide out to go show them, since they were all parked at the city park. Too late, they were all leaving town when I got to the end of my driveway.Straight shot out of town........nothing but open road and nothing to preoccupy them. 25mph speed limit. It was a parade,so I just sat at the end of my driveway with a perpetual two finger wave off my clutch grip. Got 7 rider waves,3 head nods and most all the female passengers waved. The lone Buell rider waved as well as the 4 other sport bikes. Evidently it me and not the bike I'm on...or they don't like riders that don't dress like pirates...............

That is what I do. If you are on 2 wheels and wave at me, I'll wave back.

I too have been noticing very few HD riders wave, yet just about every sport biker throws down the 2 fingers.

Almost all local riders around here will give you a wave of some sort & I always wave back no matter what they are riding. However those bikers that are traveling through don't wave much at all, but I always give them a welcome wave, it costs so little.
