So my friend dropped my Shoie RF-1000. He was standing holding the helmet at his side and just dropped it. it fell maybe 2and a half feet. Is it toast? what do you think? | ||

Technically, its toast! I may be crazy/dumb but I would still wear it. (so long as you cant see a crack or anything. If the paint is flaking off, i might reconsider.) | ||

Nothing the matter with your helmet for two reasons: 1. It wasn't going very fast when it hit the deck. 2. There was nothing in it, like a human head that would have increased its mass, the effect of the impact and crushed the protective interior foam. Don't worry about it. If you examine it closely you won't see any damage unless it landed on the visor. | ||

I know I'm going to get flamed but there has to be a difference between a sudden stop with nothing inside the helmet and a head inside the helmet. At least part of the process of using a helmet in an accident is compression of the styrofoam material as it supports the head in an accident, I know it isn't styrofoam but you all know what part I'm talking about. Anyway if you drop an empty helmet from a couple or three feet what is there to compress the foam? I personally would run the helmet, you need to make the decision that you're comfortable with. | ||

Make careful note of which quadrant struck the ground first, and just make sure you don't fall in that direction if you crash...  Seriously though, do what you feel comfortable with. (Message edited by Elsinore74 on May 28, 2010) | ||

Arai states that this type of drop is fine, check with Shoei to be certain. An Arai person stated this is a video the Jay Leno did (check Youtube) but I didn't find it with a quick google. Pretty sure the Shoei will be the same since the impact layer did not need to absorb any impact. | ||

Nothing wrong with it. The foam isn't compressed. Some hospitals will allow you to x-ray your helmet after a drop to verify that the foam is intact. | ||

It's way tough to x-Ray them though. Gotta have a prescription to shoot anything now. New laws suck. I tried shooting mine in class but it's so light density is was hard to see. | ||

Depends on how the helmet is made, really. What kind of surface was it dropped on? If it was brick or concrete, I'd trash it. Make him pay for it. Why was someone else handling your helmet anyway? (rhetorical question, no need for an answer) | ||

I would think it would still be ok to wear. My GF slammed her helmet into mine while riding and it is OK, I will still use it. | ||

Should be fine. The shell is plenty strong for a no load light impact, and the foam shouldn't be hurt a bit. If it passes visual inspection, you're golden. It's a fraking Shoei for Baal's sake. However... I remember long ago in a galaxy... well, the late 70's, anyway. I was at K-mart, looking at helmets, and I found this open face plastic confed flag helmet made in China. I'm looking at the crappy workmanship, and the salesmen comes over to make a sale. I ask about the quality, he assures me it's fine, so I drop it right on the top from shoulder height, and it cracks up the middle. Salesman is freaking out and insists I pay for it. I tell him to call the manager. When he gets there, HE wants me to pay for it. I tell him "I'll be happy to, then I will sue for everything he's got, K-mart has and will insist he's arrested for selling illegal imported helmets without DOT approval". It got real quiet after that. K-mart quit carrying them shortly after. |
