But I just got promoted to Aviation Electronics Technician Second Class. (E-5)

The promotion to Third Class wasn't a big deal because it was so easy. This promotion however, I worked my butt off for after barely missing it a couple times. (0.04 points last time)

Now that I think about it.. this payraise could more than cover the payment and insurance on one of those fancy dancy liquid cooled Buells ; )

congrats pk. glad to see ya getting ahead and my hats off to ya. i was a machinist mate and should have become 2nd class after 4 years but i goofed off and never made 3rd class. course i was on 4 ships in 4 yrs for various reasons also so that didn't help my attitude toward advancement.

USN - only place where being referred to a "2nd Class" is a compliment

Congratulations

Dave, April 31 of this year was my 4.5 year mark. Before this promotion, I had already planned on making the Navy a career. I reenlisted for two years in January. Only two years because zone A (people with 0-6 years time in service) isn't getting any reenlistment bonuses right now. Hopefully when it comes time to reenlist again, I can get a decent bonus for doing so since I'll just barely be into zone B at that time.

It's hard to believe, but even the Navy is becoming a harder place to find and/or keep a job now. Advancement rates are low, especially in the Aviation community. I've seen a lot of people who want to stay in stress about reaching high year tenure. Even the guys who want to get out end up going on terminal leave, finding that civilian employers aren't hiring, and come crawling back to reenlist at the last minute.

At the same time, a good friend of mine who joined the Army when I chose Navy, will be putting on E-6 come June 1st. Their retention rates are much lower than the Navy's and as a result, advancement rates are a lot higher. That being said, those guys deserve every single accolade they earn in return for 365+ day deployments and a much more dangerous line of work than I have.

I appreciate the peace of mind that this promotion brings even more than I do the payraise. I wasn't getting uncomfortably close to the 8 year mark as an E-4, but making E-5 just moved my HYT to 14 years. I think I can manage to reach E-6 in the next 9.5 years.. after that it's Khaki or bust!

"Chief Forbes" ooh I like the sound of that.

Havn't you ever heard the saying "I'm going to drop the chiefs off at the pool"

There's a reason for that.

Do not, under any circumstances, advance again. E-5 is the perfect place to be in the navy.

E6, not so much.

Oh, and Distance tag...

E-5, you want to know what is going on, that is where you go. The guys still doing the job, and not managing from a desk. It was the same for the navy, the Corps, and the National Guard.
