Where the ipad is superior to the laptop is as a gaming and entertainment device.

I have over 60 games and apps on my ipod touch.

That the pad can do some work would be a nice bonus to me.

When someone ports Open Office to the iPad/iPhone, then they will be much more usefull. I think Sun/Oracle are still working on OO for the ARM processor so it might happen in the not too distant future. That and FLASH for the ARM would would make it more usable when you bought the dock and keyboard or a compatible BT keyboard.

Back to the original, if you are set on buying a Mac, go for the Pro.

I think the ipad has some other benefits as well that aren't so obvious...

I was trying to use the "family laptop" this morning to check if it was going to rain today before I decided if I was going to ride to work.

The battery was dead, because the power connector (itself heavy, bulky, and awkward) has worn out the power jack... which gets a lot of abuse because the laptop won't run long off the charger. So every time you move it you plug and unplug. The IPad, with 10+ hours of life per charge, will get charged at night and used while on battery... no cord in the way or getting kicked or worn out etc..

Then the "a" key on the laptop was screwed up. Again. This is the third keyboard it has had. Cheap on ebay, but a pain to keep replacing. It had grahm cracker under it, again. The IPad, while having a more awkward keyboard, is a lot easier to "wipe off".

I think it is a killer bridge device. Big enough screen to be practical, but with the life, portability, and durability of an ITouch.

I think you meant to say the iPad screen is a lot easier to ruin, and costs a lot more to replace when it fails. : )

I realize that actually addressing a members question isn't something that often seems very important here,so I do hope that no one will take any offense if I give it the old college try.

Considering 501's age and requirements, I think he will do just fine with the Mac Book. I have one myself.

However, once one gets started with a Mac, it is not unusual to get interested in Photoshop, or video editing, or other more memory intensive uses.

Since the Mac Pro has four gigs of ram, (the Mac book has only two gigs), as well as the SD card, firewire and the much more robust aluminum unibody case, it certainly is worth the difference in price, if you can use the features. The memory itself is worth about $150 even if you buy it from OWC, the leading third party Mac vendor.

Hope that helps. I only use my lapper now and then, so I bought a used Mac book for $700, and that has worked out well for me.
Barker's suggestion of buying factory refurbs is an excellent one, especially for a first Mac purchase.

I recommend buying from an Apple store if there is one near by, as one gets the best service on units bought at the store where you expect to bring it for service, repairs, or just information.

They always ask, "where did you buy it".

If you say " right here", they seem to take better care of you.

>>>>88% of computer users use their computer to check their email/weather/facebook/download porn : ).. And on winders, play solitaire

Interesting. Folks here at Columbia University, right here where Fermi split the Atom in the basement, are doing some of the most sophisticated cutting edge research in the world on Apples.

Feel free to look AROUND.

If you are ever in NYC bring your PC and we'll have a play day doing high level stuff and you can show these "gays" how smart you are.

That'll teach'em.

I've done the dishwasher thing, works great and leaves the keys super smooth. That reminds me, I am due for a fresh waxing on my mousepad, the friction is pissing me off.

You can do that all day, no heated dry, and let the keyboard dry for 48 hours before use and no problemo!
