There are absolutely NO aliens anywhere in universe. WE are the only intelligent life forms worthy of controlling the universe. Space travel is the future. The Earth is only the 1st planet we will occupy. (plenty more out there) OH....and here is the big one................... and PROOF that we (humans) are indeed the one and only ........ GOD. (or maybe it's Dr-Craig-Venter) click here: http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Scient ist-Claims-To-Make-First-Man-Made-Cell-Dr-Craig-Ve nter-Creates-Synthetic-Life-In-Laboratory/Article/ 201005315635730?lpos=World_News_First_Home_Article _Teaser_Region_8&lid=ARTICLE_15635730_Scientist_Cl aims_To_Make_First_Man-Made_Cell%3A_Dr_Craig_Vente r_Creates_Synthetic_Life_In_Laboratory |

Oh boy...this is a flaming runnaway tanker truck whos brakes went out while careening downhill and headed straight for the inevitable Backfire Canyon... But on the other hand...I read that article this morning and do have to say that I congratulate them, it's pretty crazy. Next step, living tissue over a cybernetic robotic frame... |

I'm confused. Did they create life or only modify yeast. Sounds to me like they modified yeast. |

Just think how it could be... we can make synthetic humanoids (creatures) to do ALL out dirty work. Even travel the outer reaches of space. Maybe cloning will come into play as well... S.C.B.P.: Synthetic Clones and Body Parts Inc. We are gonna need these cybercreatures sooner than we may think. What if there ARE hostile Aliens coming to visit us? We could head them off with battle ready cyberhumans. OR.... Maybe the story of Noahs ark was actually just a preminition... thought of when boats and horsepulled carts were the norm, now we have trucks, ships and planes and spacesships to use. 2012 is coming............ |

If this is about the first synthetic cell, I've been following it a bit. All I can say is wow. We (American geneticists) synthesized DNA piece by piece, over a million sequences, from a computer through a 'machine', and inserted it into a living cell stripped of it's DNA. The synthetic organism then reproduced, including a new cell wall structure, and has since reproduced, unchanged over a billion times. Marvelous achievement. |

Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep? P.K. Dick (aka Blade Runner) Welcome to the Millennium! Let's hope BP doesn't get their hands on this 'technology'. If you can dream it, you can achieve it. Amazing. |

Maybe the next big discovery/invention will be "Synthetic Time". Think about it............. |

I remember one time, at band camp, no it was hazardous materials training, I inspected a full gasoline tanker, after it crossed the Mackinaw Bridge, that had NO brakes! The driver didn't even think anything was wrong... Anyways, yes, I like yeast, I think it makes beer and wiskey and good things like that...I also heard it can be used to make shots that help sick people. |

I wonder what these 'gods' really created. I assume they sequenced living DNA into computer code, changed an insignificant genetic marker in the computer code for reference, and then recreated basically 99.9% of the 'idea' that was already life. Interesting process of reverse engineering, but to say that it is 'synthetic life' is a stretch in my opinion. Now the trial and error part begins. Change a few bits of code and 'see' if and what difference is made. It's a big step and a baby step all at the same time. |

This making DNA stuff is more perplexing than electricity. It's black magic I tell ya. We should burn all the practitioners, the sooner the better. |

If I know Blake, no he's not. And for the record they did not create life. They manipulated DNA and altered an existing lifeform. Without the living host, what they did would not have happened. Altered life? Yes. Created it? Not even close. (Message edited by turk on May 21, 2010) |

"...The institute (Dr. Venter et all) has contracts with BP and Exxon which provided some of the funding for the project..." (Printed edition, Sacramento Bee, Friday May 21, 2010 page A8) Hmmmm, the plot thickens... |

Ok then,...so they are "designing" new life??? maybe they can also develop some new type of bacteria that eats crude oil. |

Synthetic life to do the dirty work. Wait do we really need more politicians ? Blake do not panic if its Government run research it will be over budget and never get to market kinda like green power! |

then again.... if they drop it (this new designed bacteria entity) into the ocean... then the ocean itself might become ALIVE and devour all the land into its bosum!!! |

Hmmm...crossing yeast and and bacterium with synthetic DNA? Does have some interesting possibilities. Not all of them good. Like kids playing with matches. Most times things turn out benignly, sometimes... Just like introducing carp and kudzu into the US, it seemed like a good idea to those who did it. The law of unintended consequences does not apply exclusively to social and political situations. G |
