your turtle ran away? Mine did! I have a red eared slider that I had in my pond out front. He did some rock climbing and took off. My brother lives across the street and found him over there splashing in a puddle about 3 weeks later. |

Somebody's snapping turtle ran away, too: right into our back yard this morning. Instant science class for my home-schooled son! Fortunately there's a little pond nearby where we directed him/her/it. |

I would be crushed if one of my tortoises or turtles disappeared. Believe me, these animals are anything but slow when they WANT to move. This person is obviously careless, and probably stupid. First, the picture is of a Sulcata. If it's 6 years old and only 12 inches, the animal was likely starving slowly and went in search of food. Second, anybody that thinks a tortoise doesn't like water is a moron. Probably doesn't know that you shouldn't SUBMERGE a land animal in water... Sad. |

I had a snapping turtle in my younger days. She was actually pretty damn quick. You had to walk a very brisk pace to keep up with her. Sometimes I had to even jog a little. She used to play tag with the rabbit which always cracked me up. I have no experience with tortoises but I can't imagine them being slower than a turtle. |

Did it have a stripe on the Shell? Might have been the GT version. |

Bluffview is just south of my workpace... tomorrow I start field inspections... I would probably have a frickin heart attack if I stepped on him... maybe he doesn't bite, but I have seen them hiss... and they are scary... hopefully he made a break for some secluded wetland near there... |

Look at the pyramiding on the shell - whatever they're feeding him is way too high in protein. Turtles and tortises are great escape artists, they can climb chain link fences if they decide to. They're quite intelligent and are very determined animals. I've kept them for over 40 years so that means I'm either old, very experienced or perhaps just both. No worries about Sulcatas biting you, by the way. Big ones ramming their way through your sheet rock or through a fence, well, that's another story. Pwnzor is right, a Sulcata that age should be a good 20 pounds and have an 18" shell length. These guys are one of the giants.
