Speaking of Wayne Henderson, I'm extremely honored to say I've got some of his mojo on my Garrison: Denise and Wayne at the Floyd Country Store, 1-19-2008 Wayne's pretty famous around these parts. He was kind enough to rip thru a little old-time medley on my Garrison one night after one of his gigs. I guess it's OK to continue to jack my own thread? Well then, here are two of my favorite Wayne Henderson YouTube vids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMX-kCYrEGA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXkVyom3v-g&NR=1 Now if I could just play Wildwood Flower as good as he does, I wouldn't hafta worry about getting a new BMW... |

I know there isn't much percussion in "typical" bluegrass music, but I LOVE the Alison Krauss/Robert Plant project. The drumming in these tunes is so fitting... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p4EQt8A-Ds How do you know when the stage is level? When drool is running out of both sides of the drummer's mouth. |

Nice guitar donated by a nice guy! I just bought an 00 size Larrivee, their Forum IV guitar. It is incredible. The parlor guitar is an 0 size, just a little smaller. I hope it goes for over $800. |

Carl is considering it but since he's now doing the school thing, funds are limited. Moe worried about Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, etc. etc. than playing guitars... However... Since he took all of mine.... (except the PRS) hmmm.. |

Mark, thx for the Robert Plant vid link. I have their CD, and it's great. Prof. Stack, thank you! Brad, I brought the Larrivee home from the luthier a couple hours ago. He played it for me (as he does all my gits when I pick them up - he uses a thumb pick and finger picks on his first two fingers), and the lil' Larrivee sounds simply amazing. He always tweaks the nut, and on this one he custom-fitted a bone saddle, and I had him install a new set of ebony Martin bridge pins (if you look real close at the photo of the bridge in the pix above you'll notice that one of the pins is incorrect). He also did a truss rod adjust, and capped it all off with a new set of Elixer Nanowebs. This guitar is just shy of nine years old, but has obviously been played very, very little - there's no wear ANYWHERE, and not a nick, ding or scratch to be found. There are no cracks or splits, either. It would seem that altho it wasn't played much, it must have been properly humidified. Further, it must have been owned by a non-smoker, because it doesn't have "that" smell. I don't smoke, either, and I'm careful with the humidity on my guitars. Brad, it's a beauty. You'll see other Larrivee Parlors in Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood, but this is the only one I've seen that has a bearclaw Sitka top. It's gorgeous. I'm gonna shut this dealio down at 11 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow night, i.e. Saturday 5/15. The clock is ticking... FB |

Took these photos just a few minutes ago (dangerous - take a look at the radar pic for SW Virginia right about now and you'll know why...): I hate to see this little cutie go, but my heart is light tonight. FB |

I want that guitar but... Jan has other ideas. She saw this thread and was quite clear about her wishes. She wants the master bathroom shower redone NOW! She's right, it really needs it.. Plus I just forked out $3000 for roofing supplies... plus we just bought her a new car. When the topic of the guitar came up, I got the MAJOR LEAGUE stink eye from her. No words were necessary... I am VERY happy to see the current bid, that was about as high as I could comfortably go and still keep in under the radar... This is a very neat and worthy cause.. Jerry, is there a paypal or something set up for those who would like to make a remote contribution? Brad |

...plus we just bought her a new car. Sweet! I think a new guitar would be a nice reward for being such a good hubby. Brad, your points are all well-taken and understood, and thanks a million for wanting to make a separate donation to Mrs. Dalton. I'll post my PayPal addy after the auction close. Thank you! This is one of the reason I enjoy the Buell community so much. AWESOME PEOPLE! That's a big 10-4, my brother. Tick, tock, tick, tock................ |

Just back from the Hillsville VFW, dropped off a 27" JVC color TV (thx Alex!) and two acoustic guitars - a 60's vintage Stella, and a classical Hofner-Anno of unknown age, possibly 70's vintage. Neither of the gits are particularly cherry, but they should bring a few bucks at the auction tomorrow, and I'm hoping the TV does even better. The gal organizing all of this, Donna Peery, is a little overwhelmed with it all - she's never done anything like this. Her "real" job is running Brady's Market, a local farmer's market that has historically bought the Dalton's cauliflower crop. I asked if Mrs. Dalton was going to be able to keep her farm, and, sadly, the answer was no. It's just her and her young son Zachary now, and managing the farm by herself isn't a reality. Very sad. The money being raised tomorrow is going to be given to Mrs. Dalton to use as she best sees fit, with no strings attached, as the saying goes. I think this is as it should be. I talked to Donna about the mechanics of how to get the money from the Larrivee auction to Mrs. Dalton. I don't think it'll be a problem. It's my understanding that local farmers/neighbors and the AG class at the Hillsville High School will help Mrs. Dalton with this year's cauliflower crop, something like 100,000 plants. And after this year??? Time will tell. Three hours until this auction closes... FB |

Ferris, Give me a call when you can... I cannot swing another geetar now, but will gladly ride up with ya tomorrow for the benefit and throw in $100 for the guitar if that helps sweeten the deal for someone. In other words, take $100 off Jerry's price, I'll donate that to the cause. Jerry, I'll meet you at the Mountain House tomorrow. |

All done! Congrats to Chomos, the winning bidder. You're getting a great guitar at a fair price, and I'm sure Mrs. Dalton can put the money to good use. Thank you, sir. Brad, my PayPal addy is garrisonlmartin and then put @ and gmail and .com where they're supposed to go. Thank you, too. This is stretching Blake's good will quite a bit, but anyone else following along that would like to aim a little $un$hine in Mrs. Dalton's direction, please feel free to use my PayPal addy. 100% of any money collected will be forwarded to her. Chris, I'll drop you an e-mail here in a moment. Thank you again. FB (Message edited by jerry_haughton on May 15, 2010) |

Denise and I are just back from the benefit for Kenneth Dalton. We just beat the nasty weather that's presently marching up the southern Appalachians. Donna Peery told me last night she was a bit worried that no one would show up today. I'm happy to report the place was absolutely packed. Image deleted per owner request Lunch was served, many folks having just gotten out of church. I'm not positive of the money-mechanics, but all the folks chowing down - easily in the hundreds - paid for their meal, and some/most/hopefully all of the proceeds will go to Mrs. Dalton. That's my Stella on the left and Hofner-Anno on the right. They did a little better than I thought they would. I hope they went to good homes. Alex Prior's TV, a sweet 27-inch remote-control color JVC with stereo speakers, goes up on the block. One of the auctioneer assistants was the winning bidder. This is a heart breaker. Several weeks ago one of the benefit volunteers went into Barr's Fiddle Shop in Galax (Virginia), asking for a donation for the auction. The young man behind the counter said he was sorry, that he only worked there and didn't have the authority to donate something on the behalf of the owners, but then dug a CD out of his backpack. "Ma'am, I play banjo in the group Broken Wire, and this is our CD. I'm also a volunteer firefighter, and I'd be honored if you'd accept this donation on behalf of ALL firefighters, and on behalf of Mrs. Dalton." Houston Caldwell is the young man's name, an accomplished banjo player, volunteer firefighter, member of the United States Army Reserve and former Military Police Officer. An all-around fine young man. Houston Caldwell died in a motorcycle accident three days after his heartfelt donation. His CD brought $50 for Mrs. Dalton today. The winning bidder, a friend of the Caldwell family, was sitting right next to me. I asked if I might take a photo or two, to which she kindly obliged. Houston Kyle Caldwell, may you always ride in peace. (Message edited by jerry_haughton on May 16, 2010) |

Having been raised on a farm and while that was many years back, I know just how much work goes into that/ I know all too well the stresses Mrs. Dalton is feeling and only wish it were possible for her to save her farm. The benefit/auction was amazing, I believe the whole county showed up. It is so very wonderful to live in this part of the world where neighbors look out for each other. Now then. Sweetie. What were you thinking? Have I not asked you over and over not to be posting those pix with that butt/fanny thing on me that make my hinny appear huge????? Please delete that immediately. |
