I would think he knows what he is talking about.
No, I think he would have supplied his opinion.
There are many reasons he won so many AMA titles. Not all of those are are him. |

Ditto that.
Circuit bike and street bike are two different things.
How many times has a car turned left in front of a racer on the track?
How many times has a deer popped out in front of a racer on a track? (that moose incident in Alaska doesn't count because.. that's Alaska )
ABS on a track so far is not so good as far as I can tell. Maybe the Honda and BMW will change all that.
ABS on the street in the right situation can be the difference between alive/well and dead/veggie.
I have not had the opportunity to ride an ABS bike but I would love to.
Mainly just so I can practice modulating the front break just to the point of breaking traction without worrying about locking it up should I cross that line.
It would be a great learning tool.
I believe that once they improve the rear wheel lift detection on these systems (maybe make them a little less sensitive?) that they will be a most welcome addition for those of us who are not expert/racers on the brakes.
I'm decent on the brakes but there's no way in hell that I can consistently match my shortest stopping distances. There's a lot of fluctuation between my practice runs. There's usually a good 10-20 foot difference. That's a lot of room for error when there is a car or animal involved.

about the same here but when you add water sand gravel rough roads pot holes pavement stripes tar snakes cracks that go with the road oil antifreeze brake fluid and who knows what other crap is on our roads my average stopping distance fluctuates wildly.
I had a pucker moment last fall when I was cut off by a Buick while on the highway; I grabbed too large a hand full of front brake and locked up the tire. I heard it hum, squeal, lock and scuff (I don't think I will ever forget that sound, it is the sound of terror)
I managed to lift off (the tire gave me a chirp) right the bike and get back on the brakes again without a second incident but ABS would have been nice that day.
no I didn't lay it down, no I didn't rear end the Buick, but no I wouldn't put a great deal faith in my ability to repeat the performance, especially under varying road conditions. |

ABS with a on/off or road type lever would be the best for bikes like the Ulysses. for cars I want the same thing. especially when driving on snow, ice or slush. |

Yes, an off option should be the norm.
BMW has an ABS on/off switch for their F800GS for when going off road.
Sadly their F800ST (closest thing to an XT that I can think of) which shares the same engine & switchgear does not have that option. If you get the ABS you're stuck with it.
The bummer is that the switch gear on the ST has the pod for the on/off button so it's doable. BMW would only need supply the switch and do a quick reprogram to the ecm.
In a perfect world you should be able to switch off ABS for track days and when romping around in the twisties on perfect dry asphalt then turn it back on when you encounter dirty roads or traffic or when the rain sets in. |
