I just finished up my first day of a three day trip from Colorado to New Jersey (Uly trip thread), and had a throttle body shaft break on my Uly within two miles of a friends house in Columbia, MO. Is there anyone within an hour or so of Columbia that can help...I need an XB12 throttle body. If so, call me @ 303.520.5783 |

That is good to know Frank. If nothing closer shows up by morning I am looking into taking my intake to him tomorrow. He has his laptop and cable for the TPS reset. His intake seals are fresh, as are mine. By taking mine off, I either ride Blastulys or take the ol' pickup. Jeremy, you 'spose Bumpus has one in stock? |

I can check to see if we have one in. I doubt it, but you never know what's hiding in the parts racks. |

Bump...anyone closer closer to Columbia, MO with a spare throttle body compatible with an '06 Uly? I had someone in Saint Louis offer up one off a 2008 Uly, but I'm assuming with the ECM change that year, it would not be compatible. |

Steve, I know this sucks but you my want to look into a UHaul. I will give HCHD a call to see 1. if they have a throttle body I can ship to you somewhere of your choosing or 2. if there is a shop along your route that has one. Frank |

Thanks Frank...yes I will check into the Uhaul thing, but they don't open until 9 am (central time). And the web quotes looked pretty "spen-sive". Do you know the best vehicle to rent? A 10' truck seems to be the smallest, except for the PU trucks which nobody seems to rent for a one way trip. |

make sure it has a way to tie the bike down and I would not mention what you are using it for just in case they get freaked out about that. |

Steve- New12r had this happen a couple of years ago and had a machinist make him a new, stronger shaft for his throttle body. Rather than milling one side of the shaft to create a flat area (resulting in removal of more than 50% of the material), he had a thin slot cut in the shaft the the butterfly fits into, which leaves a lot more "meat" in the shaft. You probably don't have time to do this right now, but when you get the bike to NJ, this looks like a better, cheaper repair than a new throttle body. See post here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=142838&post=1366520#POST1366520 Charlie may even be able to supply another one on fairly short notice. It'd be worth dropping him a PM to ask. |

I rented a 14' Budget(that is all they had) in Blue Earth, Mn last year when my throttle body shaft broke. It worked out to roughly $1/mi for the thousand or so miles home (one way). Fortunately Hal's managed to fix it (had the part) and I returned the truck about 300 miles in. One thing to note, corporate HQ would not budge on the $1100 deal and it was out of the kindness of the renting dealer (he basically tore up the original contract and re-wrote a new one for Milwaukee. BTW tie down was no problem, a couple to pull the front to the wall and a couple to the rear. Vern straps his Uly down all the time...I think he has a simpler method .... Well...against better judgment, Etennuly is on his way from Tennessee with a truck to pick up me and the bike to transport us back to his shop. I told him that it was too far...but he insisted. Now I just need to find a throttle body between here and there to install. Ft_bstrd is checking the Bumpus stock, but if we can't find a new one, Etennuly will give me the one off his bike (which again I would rather he not have to do). I appreciate the offers for help that have come...the high caliber of people here on Badweb has always impressed me. Thanks to all that have posted, emailed, called, or texted me. |

I just talked to Zac, when he gets into work at 1000 he will do a parts search and see what dealers have it. Does anyone know what years will fit a 2006 Uly? Will all years XB before 2008 fit? Anyone have a part number? Frank |

Way to go Etennuly!! LOL... I actually thought of riding out there (16-18 hours) for delivery if someone near me had a spare TB as a last resort. (on mothers day and all) Being on unemployment has it's benefits I guess. Is the TB a common thing to break? I may be asking too much Etennuly, but when you break it down... could you take pics? (No worries if you can't) |

OK...another change of plans. I have a replacement throttle body coming from someone local...so I should be starting the replacement procedure very soon. So best case I should be riding east by 4 pm, which means to stay on schedule I may have to forgo heading through Tennessee and go direct along I-70. If that is the case...it looks like I should be able to make it to Indianapolis tonight. I was able to catch Etennuly before he got too far from home. Thanks again for all the offers of help. Ok Steve, sounds like some members are coming to the rescue. I have an interesting story about Columbia MO when you return. I did that ride on my Sporty in the early 90s and that is where I stopped this first day. Zac, please post the locations of the throttle bodies anyway. Frank |

Be interested to see what kind of repair options there are for the TB. If it is as simple as a precision ground shaft with the butterfly bolted to it then it can probably be fixed. Anyone know what the diameter of the rod is? I know I have 4mm stainless on hand, might have some 8mm on hand too. Whoever has this defective part I'd be interested in the butterfly and rod pieces if that was what really broke. |

The throttle body only shows as an assembly, with TPS, injectors etc. Can't get JUST the body or any parts for the butterfly/shaft. I gave Steve the phone numbers of all the dealers that showed up on Easy-Link. We also talked about trying to replace the shaft on his old one later. I'm sure if it can be dis-assembled, I can make a new one with my bench lathe/mill. Safe travels Steve Zack |
