What's this about school kids having to run a mile? From a president that smokes? |

Yes, that is to cut back on gasoline for buses and how they are expected to get to McDonalds for lunch. |

I had to run a mile every year when I was in HS gym class. Not a big deal. I wish I could run - even across a street - now. Damn titanium... |

Titanium might suck, but where would you be w/o it? The prez also shoots hoops and gets exercise. Nothing wrong with getting kids to eat better and get exercise, unless they have health reasons not to. Seeing overweight kids upsets me, because it's not their fault, it's the parents that did it to the kid. What we do to ourselves as adults is up to each individual, but we have a responsibility to take care of our kids. |

Damn titanium... You ain't kidding. I use to run a 4.3 40 yard time. 10 years ago that is. I wonder how long it would take for me to limp it? Until my accident I could still keep up with the young jitter bugs reffing highschool football. Highschool QB's are so predictable! Use my mind...not my speed. NO MORE! |

Good! Half the kids on the hockey team I coach with can't even do a proper pushup during dryland. So it makes me wonder what they are even teaching in gym now-a-days! |

They used to make me run a timed mile in gym class when I was in elementary school. Needless to say, I never knew my time, gym class always ended first |

My boy runs a timed mile once a week at his middle school, and I'm glad he does. I'm happy enough to be able to walk a mile or two. |

Whats the problem i had to run the mile 4 times a year every year since Jr High. Once High School got there we added the 12 min run (count laps 4 times per year) and the 30 min run once a year. Add that to some sort or workout wither weights or cardio every other day. So boo hoo the lazy ass Playstation generation has to exercise. BTW i'm now age 30 and can't run for shit. Stupid cigs |

I had students in the 3rd grade that weighed as much as I did. They want to blame it on school lunches, the school lunches have barely changed. It's the extra curricular activities, or lack there of, that is making the difference. One student knew more about video games than I could ever dream of, and he wasn't no lite weight. I believe it is the parents using video games and computers as a baby sitter that has the bigger problems happening. The worse thing about it is that it is a downward spiral once they fall into that sort of thing. They bury their face in the screen, stuff thier face, get fat, get depressed, and start the process over again to cope. |

Yeah, I don't see the problem with it at all. I just have to spend 5 minutes in a WalMart parking lot to be disgusted with where we are as a nation. No wonder other countries hate us. And I'd probably be in a chair without titanium, I'm fully aware. It's just frustrating that I can walk so easily, and climb, and move around on unstable surfaces...but don't (yet) have the quick muscle reactions and shock-absorbtion to take running. It'll come...I hope. I miss it. |

won't matter, the kids that can't make it will be given a ribbon or something anyway. This BS of "everyone is a winner" stuff makes me sick. In real life sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. When you win, you shouldn't be a jerk about it. When you lose you get over it and try to do better next time. That is what they should be teaching them. I get kids in my shop that are 12-14 years old and can't pull 20-30 lbs! What a bunch of wussies this country is raising. Bet none of those kids could run a mile. |

When he was in his late 60s or early 60s, Sandy Koufax started running marathons. He did not stop smoking. Of course, he was, and still is Sandy Koufax. |

Dam* Tom you must be old. Running the "original" Marathon in Greece, bu tgood for history that you got the messeage out in time. Plus still smoking. Seems like w/ terrorism and the military restructuring themselves to be able to fight in guerrala type of warfare mode our warriors will need to be intelligent, strong and have stamina. we can no longer just sit back and push buttons like a video game and then go to Mcky d's for lunch and come back and pulverize more folks with our drones. We are going to need boots on the ground if we are to protect ourselves. The products being turned out by our school system are not only dumb they are out of shape. Was there not a report that our math graduates from high school are dumber than Latvian HS graduates in math. Pathetic. we need to stop this socialization of education and folks need to pay for education and take it off the taxpayers. Thus if folks did not prize eduction they would not clog up the system and they could work in the fields and replace our illegals, ops I mean our undocumented workers. If they didn't want to do that work too bad no unemployement for them. Being a product of private religious schools I would get my butt whipped if I did not turn in my homework. No social "pass" for this kid. |

Besides that if all the kids are fat, who will race motorcycles in the future? I really respect the parents that bring kids in that are in shape. I have a 9 year old customer that I am swapping limbs on his bow today. He started shooting 4 months ago, when he was 8 and has already outgrown his 20-30 lb limbs and I am putting 30-40 lb ones on today. And Bailey is a small kid. Then compare that to the limp wrist 14 year olds that can barely pull 20 lbs. It just ain't right. And this is coming out of Iowa, a state with tons of farm kids, you know, the farm kids that used to be tough as nails and strong as an ox. Can't imagine how bad it is in more urban states? |

Does anybody remember the Reagan years, and Presidential Fitness Awards in public schools? Kids are all fat now. Few exceptions. |

Presidential Fitness Awards go back to at least the mid '60s. I presume farther than that. I don't see anything new here. |

I used to run to my friends house when I was a kid..... and didn't have a bike. 3&1/4 miles, and it was fun and easy. I don't even remember any fat kids in school..........just a couple that were chunky a bit. I don't mind the schools having the kids run....it's just the politics of it all that bothers me. |

The big kids can be turned around. I know - my nephew went from big fattie to hard-ass marine in less than a year. I don't like thinking of him out there on tour, but then, I didn't like thinking of him as a teenage couch potato, either. |
