Basically, it means they didn't lose as much money as the Street predicted they would. |

" Worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles declined 18.2 percent in the quarter compared to the first quarter of 2009, an improvement in the rate of decline from the prior three quarters. " "an improvement in the rate of decline" Sort of like a plane slowly leveling out of a dive? In other words, "We haven't hit bottom yet but we're close" |

"an improvement in the rate of decline" In other words...."we're not tanking as quickly as we were this time last year". |

I know a lot of you would like HD to die a painful death because of the Buell shutdown, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. They will struggle vs comp numbers, earnings per share will drop but not bottom as they refocus on what they feel is their market segment. I would think that in the next year or two there will be some model upgrades, some new additions and some technological advances to the power-plant and a few other areas. Styling will probably retain the retro feel for many if not all models, touring bikes are still selling pretty well, I would imagine the greatest changes will happen around the sportster line as well as the largest drop off in sales as we used to punch them out like crazy. HD can and will weather the storm, I am not a fan of Wandell, but he may be able to pull off this strategy in the short term, I am not so sure he is the answer for the long term, but that is up to the board. I have owned and ridden HD bikes for years and had Buell not been in the HD Dealerships and been a part of HD's family I probably would have never ridden one, let along bought one. I am happy I did ride and then buy my Buells. I hope that HD does well because I am really bothered by more and more people losing their jobs. Opinions are opinions ya know..this one is mine. |

We are loosing money, just loosing less than predicted, still bleeding red, but our doors are open and we are ready for a bail out because we are too big to fail..... This is the same monetary logic that when taxes go down over a projected ten year period the govt (at least in Washington State)says that it is an immediate budgetary gap and spending shortfall, an immenent threat to required public services.....(rather than adjusting their investments, realigning their pork, and killing silly extraneous programs) Somebody name the state that has KILLED their local version of N.E.A _ name just one. |
