"...yesterday, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted for the second time on Tuesday, and as it was under a 200m-thick piece of glacier ice, it's resulted in all the rivers flooding—not to mention the volcanic ash..."

I love it, stories like this, revalations that the politicions won't admit to and common folk will never grasp.

In one day, this volcano not only broke loose and set into melting a glacier that our even our doomsday global warming predictions would have set out to happen in 20 to 50 years of our evil human abuse of the enviroment [assuming you even believe we can have that large an effect on this great big planet], but it also set upon the skys a barage of ash and pollution that again, us puny little mammals, would have a hard time matching.

Anyway, check the links and enjoy the beautiful splendor that is mutha nature.

Live, love and be nice to each other. The planet is bigger than you and when it gets tired of having us around it will simply flick us like a flea.

Iceland is a geologically astounding place... it is the only place on the planet that has a portion of the Mid Ocean Ridge that is exposed on land... It is an active rift system, which means that new crust is being formed and the new crust spreads out from the center of the area of seismic activity.

My professor from Duke University Department of Geology (DUDOG) (when he was studying at Woods Hole) did a lot of research up there.

I got to go to the East African Rift System in Kenya, Northern Kenya, in Turkana (http://geology.com/articles/east-africa-rift.shtml) in the early 90's... Some areas of the EARS are active but not like Greenland...

There are only four rift systems exposed on continental earth (not counting Iceland) Lake Baikal in Russia (which you have to study through geophysics and sub lacustrine sampling), Rio Grand Rift Valley in New Mexico US, the EARS in Northwest Africa and the Midcontinent Rift System in northern Michigan and Wisconsin and under Lake Superior.

I came up here (Wisconsin) to do my Masters in Structural Geology on the Mid Continent Rift System... more exact to do a post-kinematic analysis on Keewaunau dikes as movement indicators...

That would have been a tough project because the Precambrian age of the rocks (as old as you can get pretty much... 4.5 BILLION years old) and the extensive weathering of the rocks and the ground cover (lichens and such)... but you can get around that by taking oriented samples (that you measure the strike and dip of and then use a portable drill to take them out of the bedrock... like we did in Kenya).

Iceland would be my first place to visit if I could go and then Hawaii. Even so I have seem some pretty cool stuff during my years as a geologist.

You made a perfect statement.

It's nice to see I am not alone with my correct opinion.

As a result of this, virtually all flights in Northern Europe are grounded, due to the ash cloud.

The dust is even coming as far as here, my car was covered in a fine coat of it this afternoon.

The main airport in Paris, Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, should have had over 300,000 people through it today. It will not open before 8 am tomorrow & even that is far from certain.

It's causing chaos here.

It'll be very interesting to see what effect this has on world-wide weather. IIRC the last time we had a major eruption there was significant cooling for a year or two afterwards.

God is just explaining to the AlGore how climate is adjusted on a global scale. Then we get the AlGore to apologize, admit his errors and maybe fling himself into an active volcano we can return to our normal lifestyle.
