Why does my MC stall out on me?

When going down the road on my Honda rebel 250 cmx from home to work it stalls (at 40 mph), then I have to break an pull over. This is after traveling, approx. 20 miles on it.

Then it sits in the parking lot for 8 hours at work (clear skies) and I get on to go home and it stalls out, like right out of the parking lot after stopping at the stop sign, sitting in first and turning in first/ shift to second and boom.

FYI: The gas tank is full--I filled it up that morning at a ridiculous, .33 cents.

After the stall from the stop sign some nice people pulled over and asked if it was o.k. , I told them it wouldn't start. The person said flip on the reserve, I did and it started...
I have 320 miles on it and it was just serviced, full tune up, oil change, filter, and fluid check.

Anyone have insight to this? It would be great.

Your bike has no fuel filter.

I'd pull the petcock out of the tank (under your left thigh when sitting on the bike) and make sure it's clean. If it's ever sat for a while with a tiny bit of fuel in the tank, it could be gummed up.

If that doesn't do it for you, pull the carbs and check to make sure the floats and bowls are clean.

Get a $2 fuel filter and put it in line between the petcock and the carbs.

I just noticed you have only 320 miles on it. I bet the bike sat at the dealer for a while. Have them fix it, warranty issue.

The sense of community (not communism) is definitely stronger here than on other moto-forums...

Laura, whether by chance or by design, you stumbled into a good place to find help.

Feel free to send me a PM, I've got some experience working on that same bike. Still, if it's new, the dealer should fix it. Your problem likely exists between the fuel tank and the carbs.

I would have to agree with the above comments. I had an old Ninja 250R that would do this and one of the troubleshooting tactics was to switch to reserve. If this clears the problem up, more than likely the petcock or assembly is gummed up.

Glad to see you landed here, this is certainly a helpful community... just don't get upset if we try and get you on a Buell later on. : )

Thank you all for your responses. I will try everything you all have individually suggested and see what works.

FYI: I picked this Buell forum because it has the most communication on it after reading other forums in here. I liked it.

So, I'll be here for awhile.

I don't mind if y'all try to get me on a Buell later..I'm just getting started.

Thank you all. I am thankful that i landed here. It truly was happenstance.

swordsman,

The deal with filling up for 0.33 was to say, my tank is as full as it can be and still stalling. everyone syas, as a first intial response, because i am flipping to the reserve tank, that i need to "fill up the tank" , and it is already full.

So, i wanted to move forward with further trouble shooting (deduction reasoning).

Be sure to remember to use/turn off the choke after starting your bike- it is air-cooled and can act very strange until up to operating temp.

that is a good one, i was at first, but since it has been serviced, the choke is off all the way when riding.

Do you let the bike warm up before riding? If you do a cold start, push the the choke back in after a few seconds, and then ride off, it would be very likely that it would stall the first time the revs fall (at your first stop). Air-cooled engines are very finicky- you have to learn what they like/don't like, and how long it takes for them to get "happy". It is not uncommon for an air-cooled engine to need 15-20 miles to reach operating temperature.

It's better to let it warm up longer than shorter, and you can rev it a little and shut the throttle to see if it wants to quit on you- it's safer than testing it in traffic. With more time and experience I'm sure you'll learn your Rebel's personality.

i dont' really give it much time to warm up when i start out in the morning. I would say a couple of minutes. I start it with the choke off (it starts right up)...should I open it when I first start it in the morning, then turn it off after a few minutes? --This may sound like a ridiculous question, but one i must ask.

I always start my wife's air cooled Buell (Fuel Injected Bike Though...) and let it warm up in the morning a little before I take off... It gets about 3-4 minutes to idle while I go back in the house to gather my stuff and put on my gear. You may have success this way and when you come back out, just unchoke it and ride away.

It sounds silly, but check and make sure you're not filling the tank TOO full, which can create a vapor lock scenario and be sure the tank vent tube isn't bent.

Also, the Rebels we use at MSF foul plugs really easy, so you might check and clean them. It's so easy I can do it.

And definitely take it back to the dealer if it's on warranty. These are easy bikes to work on and they should make it right for you.

PS: The Blast will be a great second bike!!!

Let it rev on the choke until you feel the side of the engine get a bit warm.

They jet air cooled bikes pretty lean to get them to pass EPA regs.

Don't be afraid to let it run for a while before you take off.

I would wager that the petcock thing was coincidental and the engine's heat was just evening out as it was stopped.
Another thing:
your bike hasn't broken in yet.
Take it out and beat on it!

My old Civic would do this on damp mornings.
I used to have to start it, warm it up, let it stall, wait a minute and then it would run fine for the rest of the ride to work : )

Fuel tank vent tube is probably kinked or plugged. Will run for a while until too much vacuum builds up in the tank then it quits.

Thank you all for those tips.

For the last two weeks I have been running non-stop. I finally get a chance to sit down and breathe, just a bit.

those screen shots are awesome and a huge help. Pwanz, thank you for those and I hope you got some rest.

I started it up, let it idle with the choke wide open, got my things together while it was going. then took off and drove 16 miles to destination 1--no stalling. then home 16 miles, no stalling.

now let's see if i can make it the 23. miles with no stalling..--that is the key.. then i can go on these bike runs without worry.
