i worked with a guy who was in the coast guard stationed over in vietnam. although we considered them the rich mans navy, they need to be remembered none the less. | ||

A group of us all joined the military before our senior year in 1987; there were 12 of us. Only one joined the Coast Guard. We would get together and compare missions and hops and activities... The Coastie beat us all, every time. You gotta remember drug interdiction, mine warfare, sea rescue, shipping lane protection, harbor patrol... those guys are BUSY. Hats off to the crew that is technically 'Transportation' now Homeland Security. | ||

Coast Guard dudes (and chicks) are friggin' hard core in my book. Not every person in the military is going to be the first in, last out... spearheading operations or whatever. Our military is a giant machine, with millions of moving parts. The whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts. How many drugs have they kept off our shores? Are you serious? You can argue which branch is better all you want. But to compare our service men and woman to people trying to avoid the draft??? Personnaly I'm grateful for all who served, and are serving. Be it Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, Army, and I'll even include the LEOS Firemen and teachers. God bless them all! | ||

See, this is where I have to defend Coasties as well... I'm a paratrooper in the Army... I have worked with all sorts of "cool guy" groups and the stories I can tell are fantastic, but when I come home, all we do is train. Most Coasties are "deployed" or doing their actual job 24/7. Big difference. They make not see the glorious combat, but in their own way they do more than the rest of us. Oh and thanks for the support. If all goes well I can stick through another 12 years of this active duty stuff and retire just in time to get a new job.  | ||

I think those that talk down about the CG don't understand what we do and think the military is just about blowing things up. Ask the people in Lousinia what they think about the CG. Ask Fishermen what they think about the CG. The odd thing is when we do our job the public doesn't notice. Unless we terminate them from their duck hunting trip for having no lifevests, no radio, no flares, and no lights, in a worn out leaking john boat with their young kids bailing. | ||

Im gonna go out on a limb and speak for all the Military guys be it Active, Reserve, Retired, or vets. I just passed my 11y mark in the Navy and I been some places and seen some things but each and every time I see someone go out of there way to just say thank you no matter how hard core you look you get a little choked up. I did a stint in the Honer Guard while I was stationed in Everett, Wa We would go out to lunch in all of our stuff on ya know medals, rope, ascot, the whole nine. Now there was 14 of us and almost every time we would have someone pay for us. and we tried each time to find out who it was and thank them but they made it a point to remain annoy. it kinda makes you feel like your doing something right. By the way I just got back from a year in the desert and you would not believe how many Cosaties we had working with us. | ||

I personally have never served. I came close to signing the dotted line several times. Visited a recruter on a couple occations after high school and after college just never did it.I was already working in the aviation field. Sometimes I regret not joining. I am very grateful for all that served or are serving Thank You all. Though I never served,My sense of country is stong.At every sporting event I attend, I get weak in gut and get the chills watching the flag fly while the anthem is being sung or played. Buell2001b, you sound like the drunk that most people avoid in a bar. Have you ever seen a sea rescue off the Alaskan coast during a winter storm? I doubt if a twink like you would have the balls to attempt that. I spent my time in the Army back when we got spit on when we got back home and I have plenty of respect for the Coast Guard G | ||

If he had any balls he would enlist, grab a weapon and stand a post but instead he decides to insult the men and women of the USCG. How he is still allowed to post on this site is beyond me. Gregtonn, If you're referring to my post then you're missing my point. When I said "brethren" I was referring to ALL that have served past and present. I've served our great nation for 21 yrs this June (USAF) so I do not take to folks dissing the military and those who serve lightly, hence I felt the need to say something. Now just cool out a bit. MSgt Smathers, thank you on both accounts! I too never got to serve due to kidney failure. Did the 4 years of ROTC, lived with my dad through 9 years in the Air Force and 26 Years in the Army, so I feel I've seen enough of the stuff you all go through, and if given the chance I'd be right there with you. Sense of country pride goes along way no matter what branch of SERVICE your in. |
