The shorter the bullet the slower the rate of twist and velocity.........for example a round ball in a muzzle loader likes 1 turn in 66 inches, compared to a big .223 bullet that will easily take 1 in 9. The reason? The big(long) bullet has more bearing surface to grip the rifling with out "stripping"....but drive it TOO fast at the launch and it can strip too, damaging the bullet. Worse case...too light and too fast will turn a bullet into a puff of vaporized lead after about ten feet of air friction, overheating the bullet. This is in the realm of WAY overloaded tho. My custom .17 Remington barrel at 1 in 12 spins the bullet at 3,600 rpm at 3,600 feet per seconds muzzle velocity. I have found the more you know about the dynamics of it all,the more you wish you didn't know it. |

Speed & mass are how bullet's are measured, but A reason that a heavier bullet ( of the same construction ) needs a faster twist is it's longer, more arrow-like. A lead free copper alloy bullets ( lighter ) want more twist since they are longer. A lead free tungsten/frangible bullet ( heavier ) may like less. 1-9 is considered most versatile if you are not running the heaviest/longest bullets. 1-8 or 1-7 does better on those. ( with a little penalty on the lightest varmint weights ) 1-14 is for the lightest/shortest bullets, and is a bit obsolete now that heavier bullets are "in fashion". There's a concern with too fast a twist for 2 reasons. ( edit: plus stripping the jacket as noted above...beat me to it! ) A. a bullet spinning too fast may "over-stabilize" and lose accuracy. When a bullet leaves the muzzle, it tends to wobble a bit before it "settles down" and tracks it's arc. If it's really spinning, it may take longer and lose accuracy. B. A lightly constructed varmint bullet can be spun so fast that centrifugal force makes it vaporise. Cute little puffs of copper & black 20-50 feet from the muzzle. I find that a 68gr. OTM bullet works fine in a 1-9 twist. ( in one Bushmaster 22" brl. ) Fine with 45gr. too. Just 1 box of 77gr. tried so far at 100 yds. and no keyholes. YMMV Current "regular" military rounds run ( very roughly, very) from 55 to 77 grains. And here's links to stir the pot. Everyone has an opinion, and it's such an arcane science, with such a high degree of chaos, that terminal ballistics should be taken as imprecise and not "settled". http://ammo.ar15.com/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ /index.htm http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=185 There's also a great site with ballistic gel tests & pics but I can't find it right now.... so http://www.mouseguns.com/amball.htm and one of my all time favorites. http://www.theboxotruth.com/index.htm (Message edited by aesquire on April 07, 2010) |

My favorite has been an M1 carbine (with the bayonet for added points) built by a typewriter company. Accuracy not so great (it was a close quarters weapon after all), fire protruding out of the barrel...priceless. Oh, and shells flying out the side of it, also priceless. |
